  1. The Library Paul & Joe

  2. 1. Where is the genre used? What kinds of activities happen there? What kinds of people come here? Do these have a shared objective? • The genre that all three of these have in common is that they’re used in the library. • Activities that happen in the library would be studying, finding resources, a quiet place, and of course a focus place. These are the social characteristics that this these types of genre show. • People that come to the library would of course be people with a desire to learn, people looking to better their grade, and people with curiosity in any type of subject as they would most likely come to the library to do their research. • Not everybody has the same objective. One person might check out a book for their son to read while one person might be checking out a book to pass a grade that they’re failing.

  3. 2. What is the interaction it accomplishes? • The interaction that it accomplishes, starting with the dewy system, would be its interaction with the user and how it would inform us of what each shelf has in terms of books. With the quiet zone sign the interaction would be how it sets up an environment where it is pure quietness for the desired user. Finally with the historical significance plaques it would also, like the dewy system, inform us about a specific genre.

  4. 3. Who uses the genre, and to do what? Does the user change for each genre piece? Why and how do you know? • People that use the genre would again be students, teachers, and anybody with the desire to learn. • Whether it be the Dewy decimal system or the historical significance signs, the users would interpret the genres as they are similar and use that knowledge to their desired needs. With the quiet zone the user would change a bit as they wouldn’t be interpreting anything as it is a place to focus and be quiet. • I know because I have seen each of these types of genre used in the situation.

  5. 4. What subjects does the genre discuss? • The subject that the dewy system discuss would be location as each letter and number transcribes to an author and book number assigned in the designated library. The social aspect would be defined as it socializing with us to inform where the book would be. For the quiet zone the subject would have to be obviously quietness and focus. For the historical significance signs the subject that it discuss would be history as it goes into depth about how a particular part of the library came to be or how the name of this library came to be. This is the historical characteristic of the genre.

  6. 5. What relationships does the genre suggest? • The relationship that these genres suggest would have to be similar as they all have a meaning. The dewy system points to all the books in their assigned alphabetical order, the historical significance plaques inform us about the history behind specific points, and the quiet sign tells us that this area of the library is meant for quietness in order foe the user to study and for that purpose only.

  7. 6. What roles does the genre suggest for participants? • The role of the dewy system is to inform us of where the book would be as obviously there are thousands of books in a library. It is a chart in front of every bookshelf with a word and number which is direct to the author of the book. The quiet sign plays the role of giving the users a place of quietness. Lastly the historical significance sign has the role of informing us also as it tells us about the history about the particular subject that it was created for.

  8. 7. What kinds of languages are used within this situation and genre pieces? • The languages that are used within this situation starting with the dewy system would be broad. Seeing how it is placing every book in its assigned place it is a lot. With the quiet zone the language would be reserved as it is obviously quiet. With the historical significance plaques the language would be historical, if that makes sense, as that is its characteristicshow casing the history behind the particular object that the plaque was created for.

  9. 8. What label would you put on this situation? • I could use a lot of labels for this situation such as education, higher learning, written knowledge, or historical. I think that historical would fit our three examples the best. First off the Dewey decimal system is a system of numbers and letters to organize books into a library this has been used since 1876! And has had 23 major changes throughout its life with the most recent in 2011. • I would also label the quiet signs as historical because the library has been know since the very first library for being quiet. But through the years it has changed now the building have to have sections of quiet instead of the whole place. There are now places inside the library that encourage people to talk and work together and not be quiet. • The third example we found in the building was a very historical statement that tells us about something directly from the history of the library. We choose a plaque that tells about the first chairman of the campus telling when and how he was appointed as chairman.

  10. 9. How does the situation shape the genre pieces? • The library shapes the examples in different ways. Our first example is the Dewey decimal system and the library has shaped it into the system used today for the maximum organization inside a library. The quiet zones were formed so people could read and work in a quiet area. The library shaped the plaque by putting it onto display so everyone will remember it!

  11. 10. How do the genres shape the situation? • The situation with our three historical examples shapes the genre of the library in a great way. The Dewey decimal system shapes the way it is organized. The quiet zone signs shape the type of people in the library and where people position themselves in the building. The first chairman of the school is the one who created the library and created the environment in and around the place.

  12. 11. What does the genre allow its users to do and what does it not allow them to do? • The quiet zone allows people to read and work in peace. It doesn't allow its users to be loud and disruptive. The Dewey decimal system allows people to find their books with ease. It doesn’t allow its users to be lost. The historical plaque allows people to learn and remember the history of the library. It doesn’t allow its users to not know its history and listen to heresay.

  13. 12. Whose needs are most served by the genre? Whose needs are least served? • The quiet zone best serves people who want to work alone and get things done in a quiet area. They least serve the people who want to talk in groups and have conversations. • The Dewey decimal system best serves people looking for books or people looking where to put books back. The system least serves people who don’t want to find any books in the building. • The plaque best serves people who would like to learn the history of the library and least serves the people who don’t want to know anything about the history.

  14. 13. Does the genre enable its users to represent themselves fully? • . Yes the genres we have picked out of the library do shape the users they make them social threw the sections of the building like the quiet zones make people not as social but the Dewey decimal system allows people to represent them selves by showing them the books they want very easily. The plaque enables people to learn the history of the library if that is what they want to do to represent themselves.

  15. Genre analysis The situation that we have went with was the library. 3 pieces of genres that we chose from this situation was the dewy decimal system, the quiet zones, and the historical plaques. We felt as they all had their own significant differences from one another. When we analyzed all 3 of the genres that we had chosen, we saw that the three characteristics that best described them in the library were socially and historically. Starting with the dewy system and how it is social starts with how it interacts with us and informs us of where each individual book will be based off of their system that they have in place. Historically it has been changed over 23 times over the years as more and more books were put in place. The quiet zone has the social characteristic as it also interacts with the people around them telling the people to be quiet basically as it is a quiet zone. Historically, the quiet zone has been adapted over the years an even more silent area for people looking to study and focus. Lastly we have the historical plaques. Socially, they inform us about the history of that specific piece or part of the library that it was created for. Historically, they also have evolved and more pieces have been installed throughout the library. These 2 characteristics, social and historical, best describe the 3 pieces of genres that we have chosen in this setting.
