The Library provides… • Books, ebooks, journals, ejournals, online databases, audiovisual material and more • Help from your Subject Librarian and the Library Help Desk • Access to other libraries/Interlibrary loans • Postal loan service • Extra support for students with a disability • Study spaces, photocopiers, PCs, printers and access to the wireless network

Books, ebooks and audiovisual material • Search for these via the Library catalogue • Use Advanced Search to narrow your searches • You can borrow up to 15 books/DVDs at a time • Books can be borrowed for 3 weeks, 1 weekor 1 day and some are reference only • eBooks are accessible from outside Birkbeck with your ITS username and password • You can copy and print whatever the publisher allows from ebooks

Journals and ejournals • Check the Library catalogue for print journals • These are on the shelves on level 4 and in store • Print journals are for reference access only • Use the ‘Find a known ejournal’ searchin the eLibrary web page to look for ejournals • Ejournals can now also be found using our VuFind catalogue

  8. Overview of the eLibrary • Over 30,000 electronic journals and newspapers • Over 90 research databases to enable you to find what has been written on your subject • Exam papers from 2002 onwards • BIROn– an Open Access archive of Birkbeck staff's published research

Accessing the eLibrary • Accessible without coming into the Library • Accessible 24 hours a day • Log in using your ITS username and password • For off-site access: register your computer by setting up a cookie • This is necessary for access to some e-resources • One-off process – lasts 18 months • See http://www.bbk.ac.uk/lib/elib

Online databases • Over 90 databases which enable you to find what has been written in your subject area • Also some statistical, newspaper and image databases • Go to the Subject Guides on the Library website to see which ones are best for your subject area • There is also an A-Z list of all databases in the eLibrary - select Databases and Online Resources

  12. Search tips for databases • All databases have different interfaces but the same search principles apply • Think about your keywords carefully before you start • Consider alternative terms for the same concept

  13. Search tips for databases • Use truncation for variant spellings E.g. litera* will find literary, literature, literatures etc. • Search for exact phrases using quotation marks • Combine words / terms using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to focus results

  15. Use this basic search screen to perform a simple keyword search • Select Advanced Search to specify publication date, type of article, discipline etc

  17. Set up a MyJSTOR account to save citations, save searches, receive email alerts for saved searches, tracked journals and tracked citations

  18. Keeping up-to-date • Many databases provide alerting services • Set up your own profile • Save searches so you can re-run them • Save search results • Receive alerts when new articles are added • Receive tables of contents (TOCs) when new journal issues are added

How do you find an ebook? • A growing number of ebooks are available • Find them via the Library catalogue • You can also search whole databases of ebooksat… http://www.bbk.ac.uk/lib/elib/ebooks • …but we won’t usually have access to all the ebooks in a database • You can usually print from ebooks but most restrict the number of pages
