  11. The Present Continuous (the “ing” form) • Study these sentences: • What are you doing? I amlistening to the weather forecast. • Where is the Chief Engineer going? He is going to the bridge. • Who is repairing the valve? The Third and the fitter are repairing it. • The ship is not leaving the Port of Split. • Why is the ship sinking? • A pilot boat is approaching our vessel. • We are entering the main fairway. • Ana is not watching TV at the moment. • The kids are sleeping now. • I’m not kidding. • She isn’t carrying ballast waters.

  12. THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS – USE • The present continuous form is used: • when speaking of a continuous action that is happening right now. • E.g. We are watching this slide. • A student is sitting next to me. • It can also be used about an action that will happen in the near future. • E.g. I am flying to Dubai next week. • We are going ashore tonight.

  13. How to form The Present Continuous • the verb BE + main verb with “ing” ending. • am / are / is + playing • I am playing. • You are playing. • He / She / It is playing. • We are playing. • You are playing. • They are playing. • NOTE: all these actions are taking place NOW.

How to form The Present Continuous • the verb to be + the main verb with “ing” ending. • am / are / is + playing • NOTE: The following changes take place when adding the ending “ing”: • a verb ending in silent –e drops the vowel • Ex. come – coming • after a short vowel the consonant doubles • Ex. sit – sitting run – running stop – stopping • -ie changes into – y at the end of a verb • Ex. lie – lying tie – tyingBUT:cry – crying

  15. The Present Continuous – Questions • Questions are formed by reversing the order • of the auxiliary and the main verb: • Examples: • The wind isincreasing. • Is the wind increasing? • The engines arerunning smoothly. • Are the engines running smoothly? • How are the engines running?

The Present Continuous - Negations • Auxiliary verb BE + not + the main verb • I am not listening to the radio. • She is not listening to the radio. • Marta and Petra are not listening to the radio. • NOTE: The short forms isn’tand aren’t in everyday speech. • She isn’tlistening to the radio. • They aren’tlistening to the radio. • I’m not listening to the radio.
