  1. Propaganda Response Revisions

  2. Format • Is your paragraph indented? • Is your response paragraph double-spaced? • Is your response paragraph left-justified? • Is your response paragraph in a 12-point, readable font?

  3. First-Person Elimination • Read through your explanations. • Highlight any time you use first-person pronouns in your writing. • “I chose this propaganda type because . . . ” • “To me, this shows . . . ” • You will need to change any first-person usage to third-person. • “This propaganda type shows/demonstrates . . . ” • See me later if you need help.

  4. Second-Person Elimination • Read through your explanations. • Highlight any time you use second-person pronouns in your writing. • “You can tell this is slogan because . . . ” • “The company wants you to buy because you . . . ” • You will need to change any second-person usage to third-person. • “The viewer identifies this as slogan because . . . ” • “The propaganda affects the buyer by . . . ” • See me later if you need help.

  5. Topic Sentence • Does your response paragraph have a good topic sentence? • This ad for __________ is an example of __________ propaganda. • __________ propaganda is visible in this advertisement for __________. • Your topic sentence needs to identify the type of propaganda you are going to analyze. It also needs to identify the company or product/service.

  6. Sentences 2 and 3 (and maybe 4) • In the next two sentences, you should have two focuses: • Telling how the advertisement shows that type of propaganda. This is where you connect it to your notes and/or the definition given in class lecture. • This is transfer propaganda because the company uses pictures and feelings that have nothing to do with the product being sold. • Telling how the buyer is affected by this propaganda. • Transfer tries to influence the buyer’s feelings about the image they see and then transfer that to the product being sold. Here, an ocean sunset tries to make the buyer feel as if they eat this box of dry lima beans, they will feel the same as when they are watching a sunset on the beach. • Your 4th sentence here may extend the explanation or make more than 1 connection to the propaganda’s definition.

  7. The Last Sentence (or Two) • In the final sentence(s), you just need to make a clear connection and conclude. • Therefore, this ad for Henry Fields lima beans is an example of transfer propaganda because the buyer’s response is based on emotion more than logic or credibility.

  8. Grammar “Killers” For This Project • Capitalizing the types of propaganda • This is Slogan propaganda.  WRONG! • This is slogan propaganda.  CORRECT! • Calling the advertisement an “add” instead of an “ad” • To add is to sum up, like in math. • An ad is short for advertisement. • Contractions that are missing apostrophes • Transfer doesnt persuade by logic, only emotions. • Transfer doesn’t persuade by logic, only emotions.
