  2. Main Points to Present • Definition of Wood • Classification and properties • Uses • Kinds of Wood

  3. Definition of Wood • Wood is an organic material; in the strict sense it is produced as secondary xylem in the stems of trees (and other woody plants). • Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber. • Wood forms around a central core in a series of concentric layers called growth rings.

  4. Classification and properties The most widely used woods come from two groups of trees: • The conifers or softwoods (e.g., pine, spruce, fir),

  5. Classification and properties • The hardwoods (e.g., oak, walnut, maple).

  6. Clasification and properties • Density and moisture content affect the strength of wood; in addition to load strength, other variable factors often tested include elasticity and toughness. • Wood is insulating to heat and electricity and has desirable acoustical properties.

  7. Clasification and properties • Some identifying physical characteristics of wood include colour, odour, texture, and grain (the direction of the wood fibres).

  8. Uses • Commercial • Construction • Fuel • Furniture and utensils • In the arts • Sports and recreational equipment

  9. Kinds Of Wood • Ash • Beech • Birch

  10. Kinds of Wood • Cedar • Chestnut • Ebony • Mahogany • Maple

  11. Kinds of Wood • Oak • Pearwood • Pine • Rattan • Rosewood

  12. Kinds of Wood • Satinwood • Walnut

  13. Conclusion As we have seen, wood is one of the most important organic materials in the world. We can`t imagine our lives without wood; it only takes a look around to see wood, in its different presentations. Wood comes from several types of trees, each of them has an use and properties. For general culture, it is important that we know their types, and what it is used for. Can we imagine a mahogany pencil? Certainly, the world is reducing the use of wood, several materials has replaced it; but always we will depend from it.
