  2. Indie rock Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s. The meaning of the term "indie rock" is contested today by many musicians, fans and commentators. Most use the term "indie" to describe any rock music produced by artists working within the network of independent record labels and underground music venues that emerged in the United States and elsewhere in 1980s and 1990s. Indie rock artists are known for placing a premium on maintaining complete control of their music and careers, releasing albums on independent record labels and relying on touring, word-of-mouth, airplay on independent or college radio stations and, in recent years, the Internet for promotion. However, in the 2000s many acts with a musical style identified as "indie" signed to major record labels or their subsidiaries, and began promoting themselves through more traditional media outlets. This has led to a further blurring in the meaning of the term.

  5. Background information . The term "indie rock" is short for independent rock, and refers to a category of music in which many artists are on small independent labels or are unsigned, as opposed to being signed to major labels. Indie rock artists are often played in heavy rotation on college radio stations, so this type of music is sometimes referred to as "college rock." Some of the earliest indie rock bands who met popular acclaim on campus stations were REM and 10,000 Maniacs. Many of these people, who often dress in unique vintage clothes, are referred to as hipsters. Many cities have large indie rock scenes, particularly New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, among others. In such cities, the local independent rock bands have very strong followings, which helps them to expand into other areas. Today, there are many different styles of indie rock music. The low-fi style, epitomized by bands like Sonic Youth and Pavement, features an unpolished sound and frequent distortion.

  6. Competition • Enter the Indie Rock vs. the World contest now, where in the spirit of Scott Pilgrim’s battles to win his true love, bands will battle for their honor and love of music. Top 100 artists as voted by the online community will move onto round two, where they'll be reviewed by an industry judging panel. They’ll also be included on a Scott Pilgrim vs. The World content channel on Myxer.com. During the month of June, the top 8 bands chosen by the panel will have the chance to make their own music videos with clips and images from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. From there, these bands and their videos will face off in a head-to-head, bracketed "battle of the bands" to determine the Grand Prize winner. . • Along the way, the top 8 will have great opportunities for exposure and prizes, including having their contest videos featured in stores of a major nationwide retail chain
