What is OO? An original 5-7 minute persuasive speech about anything, delivered in a compelling and engaging manner (written and practiced before CulCon)
“Good” OO Speeches… • are not cliché (Facebook, procrastination, Asian moms, etc…) • combine a serious message with some levity • have clear and logical structure • have compelling evidence • weave in creative use of language • leave the audience thinking and wanting more • produce a response from the audience • Evoke pathos (emotion) – get the debater/MUNer out!
How You Are Judged • Catches attention with introductory remarks and clear thesis • Content is engaging • Ideas progress smoothly, logically, and coherently • Speech persuades/informs through convincing evidence/reasoning • Conclusion is effective/satisfying • Fluency/pauses/enunciation/projection • Poise/gesture/eye contact • Speaker’s sincerity/charisma are engaging
Let’s watch an award winning example! From 2011 IASAS Convention
Round One Try-Outs • The prompt for speeches is APOLOGY TO… • You need a come with a prepared 2-3 minute speech that relates to this prompt in some way, shape, or form • I mean exactly between 2-3 minutes, no less, no more! • Your speech can be creative in nature, though it must contain elements of a beginning, middle, and an end • You must print this speech out and hand it in to me after your delivery
Try Out Sign-Ups • Students can start signing up Oct 1st • NO changing your sign-up slot… they WILL fill up! • All participants must sign up on or BEFORE Friday October 19th – NO EXCEPTIONS! • Sign-ups closed on October 19th when I leave the building!
Time Commitment • The process involves careful writing consideration AND lots of delivery practice • We usually meet as a 3 person team once a week, though a bit more closer to IASAS • You will meet with me singly as needed (usually once a week) • You will need to be committed to writing/working on your speech over Christmas Break!
