  • Students will create a chart and visually display a nutritious meal plan for five days
  • Students will create a solution to their non-nutritious diets by creating a recipe for the class cookbook
your task if you choose to accept it
You will discover the importance of nutritious eating and the problems associated with obesity

You will be learning about the food pyramid

From the information that you gather throughout the lesson you will be creating a five day meal plan that fits the criteria for a “nutritious” diet.

You will contribute to the class recipe book that we will make together!

Why should you learn about proper Nutrition?
  • Today there are nearly twice as many overweight children and almost three times as many overweight adolescents as there were in 1980.
  • Results of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 1999 showed that 13% of children and adolescents were overweight.

  • An adult is considered overweight when he/she is above a healthy weight, which varies according to a person’s height. An individual is overweight when their BMI (Body Mass Index) is between 25-29.

You will be more likely to develop health problems such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep)
  • Osteoarthritis (wearing away of the joints)

  • Write down everything you ate yesterday.
  • Use the food pyramid on the next slide to evaluate your current diet.
  • Did you eat all of the servings indicated in the food pyramid? If not what were you missing?

Develop your own meal plan! Follow these steps.

1.Individually I would like you to develop your own healthy meal plan chart for a total of five days.

2.You will create a chart that allows you to record two meals for each of the five days.

3.Remember that each meal must include all of the appropriate components from the food pyramid.

4.Do not plan the same meal more than once.

5.The purpose of this activity is to get you to gather information and record this information in an organized chart.

6.Label your chart so that the day of the week and the different meals for lunch and dinner are clear and evident.

  • Now that you have learned about Nutrition we are going to combine everything that we have learned and make a class cookbook so that you will have a book of healthy meals to take home!

Homework: Making your recipe!
  • Choose a favorite meal from the chart that you made.
  • Write up a recipe for that meal. How do you cook it? How long do you cook it for? Do you need to cook it or can you just take it out of the refrigerator and eat?
  • Use the web sites that I suggested earlier to help you write your recipes.
  • Remember that a recipe is written in a listed format.
  • Type up your work and turn it in!
