  1. “HOW FEMALE SOLDIERS (IN SYRIA & OTHERWISE) ARE VIEWED & REPORTED ~Philip Pierce~

  2. Overview • Article will shine a light on the fact it is not just men fighting against Assad’s regime. • 5,000 women, ranging from young students to mothers are facing death on a daily basis for what they believe. • Focus on the Freedom Fighters of Aleppo- mainly the ‘Al Mouminin Aisha’/’Voice Of Rights’

  3. Perception of female soldiers in general • With this subject, we can look more closely at how women, whether it be part of a militia in Syria or in the western world, are regarded. • By doing this, it broadens the audience of the piece, even if the reader is not up to date with the events in Syria, they will be familiar with the issues of equality and feminism.

  4. Primary research • Interview with Ex Soldier, (Kyle Harrington) to obtain an insight in the Army and also his take on what he saw in regards to how women were treated in the military. • Transcript of a conversation with Amy Rathbone, who did Army training for 9 months. Fantastic open account of what its like for a girl in that environment.

  5. Primary research cont. • Taking two pictures of soldiers, one male and one female, to show the general public with the intention of identifying differences in responses to them. (Cultural attitudes.) • E-Mail Emma (Criminologist student) and ask whether she has came across cases of female soldiers with PTS or suffered psychological trauma due to other peoples attitudes.

  6. EXAMPLES OF IMAGES TO USE

  7. Secondary research • Using the internet and websites which can be useful in building up a fuller outline on the freedom fighters of Aleppo. Can also obtain case studies of individuals and quotes which can support my story. • Websites I can include are: > Huffington Post >Sky News >Telegraph

  8. Main purpose of article • We were tasked to ‘appeal to the emotions of our target audience.’ From my piece, I feel I will make people understand more the plight of these young women; pulling on the heartstrings of those reading. • Also, the feminism aspect would intrigue and inform the reader- highlighting the ongoing battles women still have to go through in this day and age when pursuing roles in the military.
