The School Day7:50 a.m. – 2:24 p.m. • Breakfast served at 7:20 a.m. • $1.40 Regular Price • STAR 7:50 – 8:10AM • Classes are 46 minutes • 3 minutes between classes • Grade level lunches: 35 minutes • $2.70 Regular Price • A la carte item prices vary • Afterschool Program: Clubs and Sports • ASP I: 2:30- 3:30pm ASP2: 3:30-4:21pm • Late bus: Monday - Thursday at 4:15pm • Late Bus route numbers are different than regular route numbers

STAR Period • Teacher Advisory or Homeroom Period • 7:50 – 8:10 daily • Teacher help, completion of projects and assignments • Team building projects and activities (Team and School- wide) • Distribution of progress reports, report cards, important information, etc. • Locker assignments and combinations • Televised school announcements • Sustained Quiet Uninterrupted Reading Time (SQUIRT) (Mondays and Thursdays)

Sixth Grade Core Subjects • 6th Grade Teams- • Clippers, Schooners and Sea Hawks • Mathematics- Math 6 or Math 7 for 6th Graders • Social Studies- American Studies • Science - Physical and Earth Sciences • Language Arts- Reading & Writing • Reading- Reading Comprehension and Note Taking Strategies • Or • Reading/Transitional Spanish 6 (FLES, Immersion only) – Days alternate between Spanish and Reading. • Health & PE

  9. Math • Math placement - Based on teacher recommendation, final grades, SOL scores and Interactive Achievement Test. • Math Strategies – An elective math class (7th and 8th Gr.) • Math Block - Math STAR math TA teacher and Math class during 1st Mod (All grades)

Academic Planning • Counselors will take the steps to ensure that each student has an Academic Plan (grades 7 – 12) that reflects student´s interests, talents and challenges. • http://www.apsva.us/page/2203 • 6th graders don’t complete an academic plan form, but will fill out an interest inventory worksheet.

  20. Important Dates • Information will be mailed to your residence in mid-August. This information will include your child’s team and STAR teacher • Schedules will be distributed on the first day of school • The welcome letter does not include information about school supplies.  Please check our website • Orientation Day - Thursday before Labor Day, August 28, from 11AM to 1PM. Also, for new students math placement test day. • T-dap vaccines are required, 6th graders will not be admitted to school if they do not have current T-dap vaccines.  Contact the school nurse with any questions • Back to School Night - Sept. 18, 2014
