  2. Welcome! This presentation has been designed to inform rising 9th graders and their parents about the high school advisement process.

  3. Outline • Today we will review • promotion requirements • high school credits • selecting 9th grade courses • course requirements • standardized tests • the HOPE Scholarship and • extra-curricular and co-curricular activities

  4. Promotion requirements To be promoted to 9th grade • You must pass 5 of 6 classes (using the end of year average). • Pass reading and math sections of the CRCT To be promoted to the 10th grade • You must pass 10 of 14 courses (5 units—3 units must be in core areas*) You will take 7 courses each semester 14 courses for the year. *English, math, science, social studies, world languagesEach time you fail a course, you place yourself at risk of not graduating on time.

  5. High schoolUnits

  6. General Information • 1 Year = two 18 week semesters • Progress reports are sent home at 4.5 weeks, 9 weeks, and 12.5 weeks • Semester report cards are sent home at the end of 18 weeks. • The grades on the semester report cards determine how many “Units” the student will earn.

  7. Number of courses taken • As a 9th grader you will take 7 courses each day • Each course will equal to .5 units • Therefore, you can earn 3.5 units each semester • At the end of the year, you can earn 7 units

  8. Graduation Policy • Students must pass all sections (English, math, science, social studies, and writing) of the high school graduation tests • There is one diploma type for all students • All students are required to complete a total of 23 units for graduation. All students take: • 4 units of English/Language Arts • 4 units of Science • 4 units of Math • 3 units of Social Studies • At least 3 units required from: Foreign Language and/or CTAE and/or Fine Arts for all students • At least 4 additional electives • 1 Health/Physical Education course or 3 years of JROTC

  9. Graduation Ceremony • To participate (march) in graduation, students must pass all required courses and pass all five parts of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT).

  10. What is a “Unit”? • 1 year of coursework in a subject area • Example: 1 year of Biology • ½ Unit is earned for each passing grade (70 or higher) on the semester report card • 1 unit is earned for passing grades for both semesters

  12. English(One Required) • Ninth Grade Literature / Composition • Ninth Grade Literature / Composition-Honors

  13. Mathematics(One required) • Math I • Math I – Accelerated • Students must take Math I Accelerated to take Math II Accelerated in 10th grade

  14. Science(One required) • Biology • Honors Biology If you passed Honor’s Physical Science in the 8th grade

  15. Social Studies (One Required) • World History • Honors World History • AP World History

  16. Required for Graduation • ½ unit of health • AND • ½ unit of personal fitness • OR • 3 years of ROTC

  17. Electives • In the 9th grade, you will enroll in elective courses. • Elective courses are selected from three main pathways: World Languages, Career/Technology and Fine Arts. • All 9th grade students will be required to declare a pathway.

Electives continued • Just in case you are not able to enroll in your first two elective choices, you are asked to select four electives. • Number your elective choices, by listing, 1 for your first choice, 2 for your second choice, 3 for your third choice and 4 for your fourth choice. • Students may be required to take math support, as an elective.

  19. World Languages • A minimum of 2 years of the same language is required for college entrance. • World languages consist of courses such as Spanish, French and Latin.

  20. Career Technology Career pathways are designed to provide students with a road map to career success. Once students have selected a pathway, they should follow this course sequence throughout their high school years. A minimum of (3) courses in the pathway sequence must be completed during high school

  22. Fine Arts • Fine Arts courses consist of Choral Music, Band, Orchestra, and Visual Art.

  23. Parent involvement • Parents will need to sign the course advisement form, indicating their approval. • All course advisement forms must be returned to the middle schools no later than Monday, December 14, 2009.

  24. STANDARDIZED TESTS CRCT, ITBS, and EOCT

  25. Importance of tests • All tests that you take are important!!!! • Remember to do your very best. There are times when your score will be used to determine the course in which you can enroll, to determine if you will be promoted to the next grade, and to assess how much you have learned.

  26. ITBS (8th grade) • Test scores are used to help identify areas of academic strength and weakness • Used as a part of the instructional planning process. • The test was given in September 2009, over several days. 

  27. CRCT (8th grade) • Test that covers reading, language arts, science, math, and social studies • It is given in April 2010 over several days • It measures what you have learned • You must pass Reading and Math to be promoted to the 9th grade.

  28. End-of-course tests (EOCT) facts(8th & 9th grade) • Any student enrolled in an EOCT course will be required to take the EOCT upon completion of the course. • The EOCT is typically given in May • Your EOCT grade will count 15% of your course average • EOCT courses, for 8th and 9th graders, include Biology Honor’s Physical Science Math I 9th grade Literature

  29. Getting Involved Clubs and Organizations Co-curricular Activities Sports

  30. Clubs and Organizations • Clayton County High Schools offer a wide range of clubs and activities in which a student may participate. • Clubs range from elected organizations for example, Student Council, curriculum-based clubs (French or Spanish), to community-based clubs such as the Red Cross. • There will be various opportunities to join these clubs/organizations once you start high school.

  31. Sports • Fall sports include: Football, Cross-country, Softball and Cheerleading. • Winter sports include: Basketball, Cheerleading, Wrestling and Swimming. • Spring sports include: Baseball, Golf, Soccer, Tennis and Track.

  32. To Participate in Sports • Be on track for graduation • Pass five (5) courses in the semester preceding participation • Entering Freshmen must have passed five (5) courses the previous school year or semester prior to participation

  33. Opportunities For Excellence

  34. Advanced Placement (AP) / Honors: • AP courses are college-level courses that you take in high school • Honors courses are highly rigorous that you take in high school • Taking such courses will give you a head start on college • Any student may take an AP/Honors course as long as you are up for extra reading, writing, and studying.

  35. HOPE Scholarship: • The HOPE covers tuition and mandatory fees at Georgia colleges and technical schools. • Grades from all of the core curriculum subjects (English, Math, Social Studies, Science and Foreign Language) will be counted for determining HOPE scholarship eligibility. • Students must earn a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 GPA scale.* *Subject to change per Georgia Student Finance Commission **YOUR 9th GRADE YEAR COUNTS**

  36. HOPE Grant • The Hope Grant covers tuition at Georgia Technical Colleges • The GPA requirement connected to the Hope Scholarship does not apply when attending a technical college using the Hope Grant • Students must be a resident of the state of Georgia for a minimum of one year to be eligible for the Hope Scholarship or Hope Grant
