  3. Course Selection TimelineFebruary 20th – April 11th • 2014-2015 Course Selection Guide : Can be accessed on the middle school Guidance webpage. • New this year: On-line course requests for students and parents.

Course Selection TimelineFebruary 20th – April 11th • Grade level meetings with the school counselor: • 5th Grade: March 3rd • 6th Grade: March 12th • 7th Grade: March 13th • Small group, and individual meetings (when necessary) will be held with the counselor in order to complete initial course requests.

Course Selection TimelineApril Course Request Entry by Homeroom: • 5th Grade: March 5-14 • 6th Grade: March 17-21 • 7th Grade: March 24 – 28 Small group, and individual meetings (when necessary) will be held with the counselor in order to complete initial course requests. June 13th: • Deadline for any changes in course requests.

  10. Math Pre-requisites Placement into 6th grade Pre-Algebra AssessmentsScores • **Computation 90% • ** Application 90% • ***Pre-Algebra 75% ** These assessments review 5th grade material. *** This assessment demonstrates Algebra readiness

Math Placement Matrix • At the conclusion of 6th grade EDM or pre-Algebra, students will qualify to be scheduled in a full year Algebra I course if they earn 4 out of the 5 possible points on the rubric below: • Pre-Algebra/EDM 6 final course average of 90% or higher (1 point) • Algebra Readiness Assessment score of 42 or higher (1 Point) • 1600 or higher on PSSA (1 Point) • Teacher Recommendation (1Point)  • PVAAS 80% Probability of Proficient or Above (1 Point)

Math Placement Matrix • Placement into Algebra 1A/1B Sequence: • Pre-Algebra/EDM 6 final course average of 90% or higher (1 point) • Algebra Readiness Assessment score of 34 or higher (1 Point) • 1550 or higher on PSSA (1 Point) • Teacher Recommendation (1Point) • PVAAS 40% Probability of Proficient or Above (1 Point) • ***All other students will be placed into either Pre-Algebra (in 7th grade) or Introduction to Algebra (in 8th grade)***

  13. Math Placement Matrix Placement into 8th Grade: Introduction to Algebra, Algebra 1b, Algebra 1, Geometry Introduction to Algebra: Completion of Pre-Algebra with 69% or lower. OR Completion of Alg. 1A with a 69% or lower. Algebra 1b: Completion of Alg. 1A with a score of 75% - 84%. Algebra 1b: Completion of Alg. 1A with a score of 70% - 75%. There would also be a recommendation for the Math Prep class to reinforce Algebra skills. Algebra 1: Completion of Pre-Algebra with a score of 85% or better. Geometry: Successful completion of Algebra 1 with a score of 85% or better.

English Course Offerings • 6th Grade: • Humanities • Gifted Humanities: Students need to be identified in the gifted program to take this course • 7th Grade: • English • Gifted English: Students need to be identified for the gifted program to take this course. • 8th Grade: • English • Honors English: Students need to have a final average of 93% or better and teacher recommendation to take this course.

  15. Math Prep Class • Correspond with Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B, Algebra I, Geometry • Placement based on Prior Math Coursework Achievement, Teacher Recommendation, PSSA scores

  16. How to add requests to Eschool* 1. Log onto the Parent Portal Go to the District Website: www.nhsd.org Go to the Parent/Community Resource  tab Click on Home Access Center (last link) Log in: • username= last name. first name (make sure you include the period). • Next, enter password (case sensitive)

  17. How to add requests to ESchool 2. Click on the "Course Requests” Tab (far right). You will be presented with two selections to guide you in the course request process: • 2014-2015 Course Options- Each subject area category is listed. • In order to request a course in a particular category, identify the subject area, then click "Add/Edit Course Selections" (far right).

  18. How to add requests to ESchool 3. A pop up window should appear after clicking "Add/Edit Course Selections". This window lists all the course choices and credit value within a particular subject area. • Find the "Request" column • Click on the box corresponding to the course(s) you would like to request. • Do Not add courses that are not checked off on your course selection sheet. • Click "SAVE“ to save your requests.

  19. Friendly Reminders Only “request” those courses which do not require a teacher recommendation ie: Math, English, Reading Depending upon final progress some changes may be requested ie: prep class. If such a request occurs, parents will be notified. Course recommendations MAY change as student progress will continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the school year.
