  1. When a Dream Becomes a Reality By: Debbie Miller MSM 620 Bellevue University

  2. I have the pleasure of working for G-Star School of the Arts, located in West Palm Beach, Florida. G-Star was founded by Greg Hauptner, a local celebrity hairdresser with a dream of creating the first Charter Film School. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Hauptner regarding the learning goals of the School, Mr. Hauptners’ vision on organizational learning and the future expansion of G-Star. Singer Celine Dion with G-Star Founder Greg Hauptner

  3. Question 1:Mr. Hauptner, please explain to me your initial vision when you created G-Star? “My initial vision was to create an Art and Film School for those students who risked dropping out of school because they did not participate in sports and other school activities that are typically the only extracurricular activities offered.”

  4. Question 2:Please explain to me your Learning Goals for G-Star Students? “My Learning Goals for G-Star students is for them to have a solid education as well as have the opportunity to attend one of the two charter high schools in the State.” “ After our initial success, we wanted to increase our focus on academics and started an IB (International Baccalaureate Diploma) program, to show potential applicants that G-Star is committed to student learning and success.”

  5. Question 3:Tell me about G-Star’s academic success? “ I am proud to say that 99% of our students graduate and 97% of them go on to colleges and universities. The State of Florida Department of Education has given G-Star an “A” rating.” “Academically, we are ranked in the top 1.4% of all national high schools by the Washington Post.”

  6. Question 4:What separates G-Star from other High Schools? “Imagine being in High School and being asked by your parents and friends, “What did you do at school today?” “How many high school students are able to answer with the following:” “Today, I got to help Jennifer Lopez film her new music video.”

  7. Question 4: Continued “Today, I got to do sound and help Celine Dion practice for her Vegas shows.” “Today, I got to meet Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks and helped them practice for their world tour.” “Today, I filmed a Tiger Woods commercial.”

  8. Question 5:Tell me about your Learning Goals for G-Star staff? “To be the #1 Charter School in the world for film, I have to recruit the best talent who are able to teach a subject and bring student learning to a higher level.” “What separates G-Star School of the Arts from the rest is that we strive to be the very best at all levels.”

  9. Question 5: Continued “Recruiting teachers who are successful in the film industry allows us to start with the best in staff and student learning.” “Recruiting actor Ron Palillo to teach film at G-Star was a major coup for me.”“RonPalillo gained international success as Arnold Horshack on “Welcome Back Kotter, and has extensive experience in the industry.” “As a film teacher, Mr. Palillo challenged his students and taught them the highs and lows of the film industry.” “He made them well prepared for a career in film.”

  10. Question 5: Continued “Other examples of excellent recruiting was the chance to hire teachers who understand the whole dynamics of the film industry.” “G-Star is the only high school in the nation to offer a course on entertainment law and business which is taught by retired attorney Alan Benjamin, the former Senior Vice-President of Metro-Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) and United Artists (UA).” “ He also presided over all of the James Bond and Rocky movies during his tenure, plus many others.”

  11. Question 6: How do you conduct continued learning for staff? “ Our teaching staff is certified through the State of Florida, however, G-Star invests in staff learning and our staff attend seminars around the country to help them continue to learn.” “I consider this an investment because what our staff learns they pass onto the students and share with other staff in weekly staff meetings.”

  12. Question 7: What are your future goals for G-Star? “My plan for G-Star’s future is to create a self-sustaining feature film industry in Palm Beach County and South Florida.” “With this component our students will go on to graduate from college and return to be employed in the film industry we will create.” “They will be the future writers, directors, producers, actors, editors, and crew for that industry.” “ We are the only educational entity that we know of that is developing an entire industry with the purpose of employing our students after they graduate from college.”
