  3. What’s Happening in Japan ? • 1931: Invasion of Manchuria • 1937: Shoot down the USS Panay • 1938: Rape of Nanking • 20,000 women raped • 300,000 Chinese massacred

  4. Japan and Imperialism • Population Explosion • Not enough land to sustain • Pacific was plentiful in resources • Big problem- • Hawaii • US Territories

  5. Pearl Harbor • Things America did know: • Japanese were Samurai Warring Philosophy • Attack was imminent

  6. December 6th, 1941 • Vice Admiral ChuichiNagumo left Japan • 6 air craft carriers • En route to PH • US Intelligence interception • 10% of a message • US commander: “I’ll get back to you on Monday.”

  7. December 7th, 1941 • Private Joseph Lockard • Giant Mass on radar screen • Commander • US planes on their way in • Flock of birds!
