  3. Distillation • So, how can we remove a solvent (a liquid) from a solution (also a liquid)?? • It’s can be easy, if both have different boiling points!! • We can distill the solvent and leave the solution. http://www.highland-spirit.com/acatalog/Distilling_Appliance_Stills.html

  4. Simple Distillation • The method goes a something a little like this: • The solution is heated in the flask until it boils. Once the steam rises, it goes into the condenser so it can cool. • The condenser is cold, so the steam condenses into a liquid • The liquid drops into a beaker. Fractional Distillation • When two liquids boil near the same temperature (ethanol and water), the fractionating column cools the water and it goes back into the solution. • The ethanol is then cooled by the condenser and comes out as a pure form (if used well!!) • Two different liquids can also be separated (like oil and water) in a separating funnel. http://www.docbrown.info/page01/ElCpdMix/EleCmdMix2.htm

Chromatography • Chromatography is separating a mixture using a solvent (like water for water based inks) and a support such as filter paper. • The paper absorbs each part of the mixture differently (it can separate different colors in inks) http://www.scienceprojectlab.com/paper-chromatography-experiment.html

  7. Experiment • Crystallization of Copper Sulfate. • Set up a bunsen burner and boil approximately 50 mL of water to boiling point. • Add Copper Sulfate until it becomes a dark blue. It should not dissolve any more. Try and not have too much down the bottom as a suspension. • Let it cool and then filter.

  8. Questions • Complete Q 1-5 on P258/259. Do this while the Copper Sulfate crystals are cooling. • If we run out of things to do Read "A Closer Look At Gases' P230-231 and answer Q1, 2, 3, 4 & 5.

  9. Time Dependant • Get some filter paper. Get a colored pen and mark a medium size dot at least 1 cm from the bottom. • You can also choose to use smarties. Your teacher will give you instructions to do this!! • Put the piece of paper in a small beaker with water touching the bottom of the filter paper. • Wait and it will separate the colors (if it is not pure)…
