MERLIN will develop: • A Knowledge Management and Problem Solving integrated environment • Media-Rich Groupware / Collaboration tools and applications • Training services that shall facilitate immediate uptake by potential users in the industry • Support for mobile and remote work, with a specialisation to interactivity requirements of frequent travellers (‘nomads’), young parents, people with disabilities etc. • Support of a multi-cultural knowledge community of practice, encompassing experiments with white collar workers from several EU member countries, and both from big and small- and micro-enterprises

What we need to join in: • Technology side: • Cross-media content producers • Vendors of multimodal interactive service environments • SMEs active in media-rich application and services • Research institutions with proven experience on cross-media application and service development • Demand side: • Users and workers associations • Enterprise unions • Business associations • Already onboard: • One big automotive company • Three EU integrators • One Telecom operator • Two mobile telecom providers

  4. Other project information • MERLIN is an IP proposal • Preparatory work started by August 2004 • Planned project duration is 48 months • Community funding estimated at 6,5 MEuros • We will make use of cross-leveraging with other national and EU-level non-research initiatives mainly for employment support • Steering committee meeting shall take place by mid of May • Memorandum of understanding shall be signed early June • First stable version by mid of July

  5. Differences from other (competing) proposals • Fundraising shall form part of the project work • Demonstration shall be co-financed by the telcoms participating in the project • A novel approach for intellectual property and intangible assets management shall be adopted • The project shall centrally assign auditing functions to an external independent auditing house • Risk and contingency planning shall be supported by self-financing. For industrial partners this shall cover 30% of their assigned budgets
