Standard • ELA4R1 The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a • warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts. • b. Identifies and analyzes the elements of plot, character, and setting in stories read, written, viewed, or performed.
Narratives • Tell a story using a sequence of events. • Narrative Elements • Characters • Plot • Setting • Theme
Characters • Are the people or animals a story is about. • Protagonist: The good guy. • Antagonist: The bad guy.
Plot • tells what happens in a story. Often a plot includes a problem/conflict and a solution. The Sun and the Wind The sun and the wind argued about who was stronger. They decided to have a contest to settle the matter. "See that man in the coat?" said the wind. "Whoever can make him take off his coat will be the winner." The sun agreed. The wind blew a long, cold blast. It made the man's coat flap wildly. The man drew his coat tighter. The wind then blew five times harder and colder. The man's coat flapped like a flag, but the man just pulled it tighter around him. So the wind blew as hard as a hurricane. It almost lifted the man off his feet. But that just made the man pull the coat even tighter. Now it was the sun's turn. It shone warmly, and the man opened his coat. Then it shone warmer still, and the man smiled and pulled off his coat.
Conflict Solution How the conflict/problem is solved. • A fight or a struggle. A conflict does not always have to be physical. • Man vs. Man • Man vs. Nature • Man vs. self
Setting • Is when and where a story takes place. • Example: This setting takes place at the beach but at different times of the day.
