  2. Reasoning • Increased of Speed and Performances of Computers • Most of this Power not needed to accomplish basic tasks

  3. Purpose • To show that an end of life-cycle computer can still be used in today’s Internet application by using the bare minimum requirement • Set Up a Dial-On-Demand Server with Firewall Capabilty

  4. The System • Computer: 386/sx - 16mhz 4mb Ram 40 mb Hard Drive • Software: Debian 2.1 using Kernel 2.0.38

  5. Installation Process • Install Operating System Swap File Issues • Delete Unnecessary Material • Setup Software and recompile Kernel • Initialize configuration

  7. Dial-On-Demand • If connection to internet does not exist, set up connection • If connection exist, reset timer • Only use Internet when needed • Set up specific connection times

  8. Firewall • Protect Private LAN from Outside World • Trust user to know what he is doing when he access outside information.

  9. IP Masquerading • Make all request for the outside information appear as if it is coming from one IP • Protects internal LAN • Removes limitations of one IP address for the network

  10. DHCP • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol • Simplifies configuration of network clients • Get IP address from Table or pool of available of IP address.

  11. PPP • Peer to Peer Protocol • Allows creation of IP protocols and other network protocols over a serial link • Standard internet connection protocol (used by Windows, MacOS, etc.)

  14. Benefits of this System • 1 IP address Needed • Money saved by not needing more IP’s • Service Provider has no problem • Internal Machines protected by Firewall • Idle time cut short by DialD

  15. Benefits of this System ( Cont. ) • Internal Machines believe they have direct connection • Internal Machines don’t have to be special configured • Cheap and abundant hardware ( 10 years ) • Free Software and Documentation

  16. Disadvantages • Internal servers have to have special settings • Some protocols don’t perform under IP Masquerading correctly • Limitation of Multi-Player games • Requires knowledge and time to setup and test.

  17. Future Consideration • Can be used as a firewall for DSL, ISDN, and Cable Modem • Can be used as a backup connection to the internet • Replace need for proprietary software and hardware so it saves cost

  18. Future Consideration • You can set up an S/WAN VPN between two sites • You should be able to call the modem and log on to the system. Instruct System to log on after hang up.
