  1. Cable Tool Rig Developed in China 100 AD Originally used to sink mine shafts and drill for salt First real use in US in Titusville, PA 1860’s Used for first 80 y of Oil industry, still used for water wells Limited to 3000 m Slow drilling-constant bailing Uncased holes, high risk of blow outs- unsafe Well fills with water Cheap, especially if labor is free

  2. Rotary Drilling Rig First used in 1920’s Square kelly rotates in kelly bushing- attached to hollow drill string Rotary table turns kelly Drill string suspended vertically to control weight on bit Mud pumps through drill string to drill bit Mud jets through bit Mud recirculates outside of drill string, up the hole

  3. Miller spuds exploration well near Tennessee blowout siteMiller rig on site.(9/18/2002 - OGI: Houston) Miller Petroleum said today it has begun drilling its Medcalf-1, a 4,100-ft Trenton-Knox well, in Morgan County, Tennessee. The well is about a mile from the Howard-1 wellsite, a Pryor Oil well that blew out and caught fire in July, destroying the rig.The Howard-1 blew out, flowing at a rate of more than 200 b/hr at a flowing pressure of 1,800 psi from the Trenton formation at about 2,500 ft. The Medcalf-1 is the first well permitted by the Tennessee Oil & Gas Board in the area since the Pryor well blew out."We had been building a lease position and working on the geology of the area for some time. We were finalizing our drilling program when the Howard-1 came in," said Deloy Miller, CEO of Miller Petroleum. "It convinced us we were certainly on the right track so we accelerated our drilling plans."Miller plans to drill at least three wells in the area to test both the Trenton and the Knox Formation. Miller is the operator of the well and has industry partners participating in the drilling program, including Knoxville-based Tengasco.

  6. Mud Testing Equipment $ 29.00MARSH FUNNELThe BAROID Marsh Funnel Viscometer is made of rugged, break resistant gray plastic that also resists temperature change deformation. Volumetric accuracy is assured. The plastic handle provides insulation to help protect hands during testing. A metal orifice assures accurate readings. The Marsh Funnel is used for routine viscosity determinations on almost every well drilling rig. $ 29.00MARSH FUNNELThe BAROID Marsh Funnel Viscometer is made of rugged, break resistant gray plastic that also resists temperature change deformation. The kit consists of a special 200 mesh sieve 2-1/2" in diameter, fastened inside a collar upon either end of which fits a small funnel. This is used with the sand content tube. The collar and funnel are made of polyethylene and the screen is made of brass.

  9. Traditional Method *drill as deep as possible with each diameter *slim down and do same *need very large diameter at surface and large rig SET-Tech. *same diameter all the way *smaller rigs *less weight-cheaper
