  5. Mock Codes • Reinforce Roles • Practice principles of BLS, PALS • Practice technical skills • Work through diagnostic problem • Pinpoint problems • Provide immediate feedback

  6. Roles Doctors: 1-Team Leader 2-Airway 3-Bedside 4-Float

  7. Team Leader • Assign roles • Run code, only one to give orders • Request consults • Crowd/Noise control

  8. Airway • Airway: O2, Suction, Intubation • CNS: Pupils • Cervical spine control • Assist with other items once airway controlled • Travel

  9. Bedside • Survey • Compressions • Procedures: IO placement, Blood gases, defibrillation

  10. Float • History • Liaison • Relief

  11. Roles Nurses: 1-Bedside Nurse (Primary) 2-Medication/Documentation 3-Charge 4-SERT 5-HUS

  12. Bedside (Primary) • Nursing assessment • Assist with procedures: NG/Foley, IV/IO, draw labs • Administer meds, hang fluids • Airway tray • Prepare for transport, travel

  13. Medication/Documentation • Document • Draw meds, mix drips • Communicate with Team Leader

  14. Charge Nurse • Obtains meds outside resus room • Circulating nurse • Assist with miscellaneous items • Crowd/Noise control

  15. SERT • CR monitor/Pulse Ox • IV/Labs • Weight • Vital signs • Assist with airway/compressions

  16. HUS • Call appropriate consults • Call for services (X-rays, EKG, etc) • Notify Pastoral Care, Security, Social Services • Send labs

  17. Key Points Airway/Breathing: 1-Suction 2-Oxygen, Non-rebreather 3-Bag/Mask 4-Intubation equipment/meds

  18. Key Points Circulation: 1-Peripheral IV or IO (eg. Asystole) 2-IO after 90 seconds 3-Labs/Bedside glucose 4-Fluids 5-Meds/Drips

  19. The Mock Code • This is no dummy • Treat as a patient • Ask for details of VS, exam, labs

  20. The Mock Code • All well-run codes are stressful, even Mock scenarios • A learning forum, not a judgment opportunity • Hands-on participation is essential
