  3. About the ISN

  4. The ISNis an Open AccessInformation Service for International Relations and Security Professionals Since 1994

  5. ISN Activities Content and Analysis Digital Library Training and ADL Communities and Partners

  6. Motivation for Research

  7. Training and ADL

  8. Trainers are used to the technology… because a lot of technology training has been conducted

  9. But the world has changed

  10. New demands for training and ADL No Desk No Laptop Quick Always online (almost) Messy Mobile Personal

  11. ISN TACC Strategic Focus

  12. How to support learning through the technology that is in the learners’ hands? Within this focus we ask ourselves

  13. How can we pave the path for trainers to make the technological transition? For the supporting ADL practice this translates to ….

  14. Today’s Training and ADL Practice in Security and Defense Organizations • Web-based • Content Centric and Multi-media • Summative Assessment

  15. Today’s Training and ADL Practice in Security and Defense Organizations • Web-based • Content Centric and Multi-media • Summative Assessment Well supported by SCORM

  16. There are a few more things we want to support …

  17. Today’s Training and ADL Practice in Security and Defense Organizations Well supported by SCORM • Web-based • Content Centric and Multi-media • Summative Assessment • Formative Assessment • Continuity of Learning • Social Media • Mobility of Learners

  18. Today’s Training and ADL Practice in Security and Defense Organizations Well supported by SCORM • Web-based • Content Centric and Multi-media • Summative Assessment • Formative Assessment • Continuity of Learning • Social Media • Mobility of Learners Not so well supported by SCORM

  19. Today’s Training and ADL Practice in Security and Defense Organizations Well supported by SCORM • Web-based • Content Centric and Multi-media • Summative Assessment • Formative Assessment • Continuity of Learning • Social Media • Mobility of Learners Not so well supported by SCORM Project Tin-can

  20. How can we support learner mobility within the constraints of SCORM? The primary question for the ISN research

  21. Mobler CardsLMS integrated Flash Card Learning Our answer

  22. The core Mobler Cards Experience

  23. Formative Self-Assessment in Mobler Cards

  24. Design Decisions for Mobler Cards

  25. Mobility Requirements • Provide access to learning • Flexibility regarding time • Timing • Duration • Support for unforeseen offline periods • Connected to the VLE

  26. Technology • Hybrid HTML5 app • Support for iOS and Android (reaching > 80% of the target audience) • OAuth protocol • Secure and persistent VLE connection • Learning material is stored on the mobile devices • Users can access the the material when they want without bothering about their connectivity • Transparent data exchange protocols • All analytics are done on the mobile device • Users do not need to be online to get feedback on their performance

  27. Interoperability • IMS QTI Item Pool functionality (test-less IMS QTI) • Data exchange between VLEs through valid SCORM packages • Learner activity tracking • No additional authoring environment needed • Most VLEs already implement this feature

  28. Interoperability Challenges • Most VLEs are not ready for connecting with external tools. • SCORM does not explicitly require IMS QTI support. • Some SCORM editors implement tests based on IMS Simple Sequencing

  29. Content • Content from courses on the VLE used • Direct use of pre-existing QTI item pools • Authoring within the VLE • No additional tool training for content authors • The Content is automatically adapted on the mobile device.

  30. Content Challenges • Content works differently on the Web than on mobiles • This is not related to presentation to content! • Creating test items that are beneficial for learning • Providing feedback that supports understanding

  31. Content works differently on mobiles Try to remember this when going to the answers

  32. Content works differently on mobiles True-Or-False items are neither challenging nor fun after answering them the first time

  33. Content works differently on mobiles Items might be too easy

  34. Content works differently on mobiles What will be learned if everything is correct? (although it might make sense in a test)

  35. Next steps • Getting Mobler Cards into the application stores • Test the effectiveness of the tool under realistic conditions • Better QTI Support • Content adaptation for existing courses • Content sequencing
