Child Soldiers • Not a new phenomenon • American Revolution • Civil War • WWI • WWII • Vietnam? • What should be the minimum age for military? • Should this be an International Law or vary by nation?
What does International Law say? Surprised? How could children be used in armed conflict?
Why are there child soldiers? If it’s prohibited, why does it happen? Why would you want to use child soldiers in combat? Why would a child join an armed force or group?
Why? • Commanders want children because • They don’t ask questions • They follow orders • They can be martyrs • They need for fighters • They are not fully aware of the risks • Children join because: • Revenge, anger • No parental/ family support • Self-protection • Poverty, means of survival • Societies value warfare, heroism, martyrdom • Peer pressure
