Key Characteristics • Power usage • PCs have access to mains mobile use batteries • Processor power • Due to power limitations mobile devices do not have raw processing power • Memory / Storage available • 1GB memories only recently available on smartphones • 32 GB storage limitations at present • Screen resolution • Mobile phones have smaller and lower resolution screens • Input method • Touch screens standard with soft keypads • Real Estate available • Not much space in a mobile phone!

  8. Laptops / Netbooks • A mobile PC? Many people use lap to replace a desktop device. • Specifications are similar to Desktop (screen resolution, processor speeds, memory and storage capacities) • Tailor made mother boards for each manufacturer. • Integrated components (screen, keyboard, memory, storage) • Emphasis on low power components to increase life on battery power. • Batteries 6000mAh capacity at 11 or 14 volts giving 1-4 hours usage. • Use ‘standard’ Intel/AMD processors • Wifi/Bluetooth/USB connectivity • High end devices have separate GPUs • Netbooks – cutdown hardware / functionality to extend battery life • 7” screens, SD Hard Drives, limited Memory (1GB), Bluetooth, USB connectors

Tablet Devices • Touch screen user input. • Light, typically 0.3 – 0.8 kg • Usually between 7 and 10-inch diagonal screen • May be wide screen or the older 4:3 format • Resistive (more accurate) or Capacitive (more sensitive) screens • Capacitive screens support multi-touch gestures • Usually 1.0 to 1.6 GHz CPUs

Tablet Devices • Operating systems: Apple IOS, Windows 8, Android, Blackberry • Solid state devices – no moving parts, low power consumption • Usually a 5 - 10 hour battery life. • Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/USB connectivity, may have NFC, GPS • Used for web browsing, media consumption, games, reading • A big mobile phone without the telephony?

Smart phone features • Processors • Still 32 bit word size • Dual Core becoming standard (among smart phones) • Almost exclusively ARM (Intel ATOM might be a contender) • Operating systems • Apple – IOS, Google – Android, Blackberry, Nokia – Windows Mobile 8 (joint venture with Microsoft) • Screens • 3.5”- 5.3” – Touch screen candy bar format • Resolution - 320 * 480 to 1920 * 1080 (HD TV res!) • LCD, AMOLED or Super AMOLED display • Capacitive or Resistive input – moving away from hard to soft keys • Memory • OS / Program Storage – 256MB – 2GB • Data Storage – 1GB – 64GB (currently ~8-16 GB standard) • Expandable Storage – usually up to 32GB

Summary • Desktop PC sales are falling, change to… • laptops and portable devices • Netbooks have peaked and are on their way out • Mobile phone sales outstrip PC sales 5:1 (3rd world usage) • Smart phones are a ¼ of all phones sales and rising • Tablets provide much of the functionality of mobile phones in a larger form factor • Apps for mobile phones sold more than $2 billion in 2010 • The future is smart phone app shaped
