Catholics and the Bible: Three Church Documents of the 20th Century • Divino Afflante Spiritu, 1943: An encyclical letter written by Pius XII • Dei Verbum, 1965: Also known as the Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, it is one of the most important of the documents of the Second Vatican Council • The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church, 1993: Written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Divino Afflante Spiritu, it analyses a number of different methods and approaches to the study of Sacred Scripture

Divino Afflante Spiritu, 1943 • Stressed that the primary task of interpretation was to determine the “literal sense” of Scripture (DAS, 15) • Defined the “literal sense” as that meaning intended by the author (DAS, 15) • Urged exegetes to investigate the collateral literature of the ancient Near East (DAS, 20)

Dei Verbum, 1965 • Understood revelation not as a text, but as God’s own self-communication (DV, 2-6) • Maintained the inerrancy of Scripture regarding those things God wished to be included in the Bible “for the sake of our salvation” (DV, 11) • Relied heavily on the insights of Pius XII in DAS regarding the need for attention to literary forms and historical context (DV, 12) • Acknowledged the “lasting value” of the Old Testament (DV, 14), even if its message comes to fruition in the New Testament (DV, 16)
