Project #1 - Awareness • Purpose Attract a larger population of quality applicants to existing schools, by increasing awareness of and interest in O&P as a profession. • Year I - Focus on states where O&P schools were located • National outreach and awareness campaign targeted at high school students and teachers, career and counseling organizations • American School Counselors Association • National Career Development Association • National Association of Advisors to the Health Professions • Amputee Coalition of America • American Association for People with Disabilities

Project #1 - Awareness • Year II • Continuation of Year I activities plus • Outreach with HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and Academy chapters. • Year III • Continuation of Year II activities with focus on schools within potentially underserved states (AL, AR, KY,MS, WV) as identified by Year I Geo Map project. • Outreach to west coast O&P schools - CA & WA • O&P Awareness video – including tags for O&P schools

Project #1 - Awareness • General • Responses are very positive • Monthly average website hits increased 250% • 40% of students are interested in learning more after career programs • Initial statistics • Student applicants are increasing • Applicant qualifications are improving (average GPAs on the rise) • Grassroots volunteer network expanding • Approximately 400 individuals listed • Career materials increasing • Requests continue to rise • 23,000 kits produced and distributed

Project #2 - Geographic Distribution • Purpose – Investigate potentially underserved areas within the United States • Year I • Developed ratio of ABC-certified practitioners to Medicare patients likely to need O&P care on a state-to-state basis • Year II • Developed ratio of ABC-certified practitioners to Medicare patients likely to need O&P care within Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) • Posting to website

Project #2 - Geographic Distribution • Year III • Year I & II data re-analyzed and evaluated to update practitioner ratios • Identify and review underlying factors creating variances at State and MSA • Medicaid reimbursement • Socio-economic status • Final report posted online • Year IV • no effort proposed

Project #3 - Strategic Plan for Advanced Degrees • Purpose Increase the level of academic research, teaching and practice in O&P through advanced education. • Year I • Findings from Subject Matter Expert (SME) meetings in Chicago and Seattle summarized into the Advanced Education & Research Training Initiative (AERTI) report

Project #3 - Strategic Plan for Advanced Degrees • Year III • Developed strategic plan, including cost estimate for advancing current faculty • Produced 2007 Guide to Financial Aid for Advanced Education in O&P. • Year IV • Contacted institutions offering Rehabilitation PhD programs & encourage inclusion of an O&P emphasis. • Contacted O&P Program school administrators to increase awareness of O&P education needs and solicit support for PhD funding.

Project #4 - Master Agenda • Purpose Improve the quality and effectiveness of ongoing State- of-the-Science Conferences (SSCs) • Year I • State-of-the-Science guidelines developed based on NIH model and disseminated • Year II • Revised guidelines, developed timelines, supplemental instructions, and templates for ease of use in conducting SSCs.

Project #4 - Master Agenda • Year III • Established Evidence Report Guidelines in support of SSCs • Structured literature review • Study design definitions and classification scales • Ranking the body of evidence • Project Lead – Brian Hafner, PhD • 2008 Annual Meeting overview of how an evidence report is done, followed by Fatone presentation on how the guidelines were applied to the SSC#8 on Partial Foot Amputations.

Project #7 – Entry-Level Education • Purpose: Facilitate advancement of O&P clinical education and training • Year I – Not proposed for Grant Year I • Year II • April 2005, New Orleans, 35 SME's discussed current state of O&P education • Collaboration between Academy and NCOPE • NCOPE mandated entry-level master’s degree • Printed findings and recommendations • NCOPE presented at Academy Annual Meeting

Project #7 – Entry Level Education - • Year III A series of NCOPE meetings with O&P educators (CAAHEP-accredited programs) to develop Master’s level curriculum guide • Developed master’s curriculum guide and transition plan for current accredited programs • NCOPE’s commitment to 2010 date for new programs applying finalized

Project #7 - Entry Level Education • Year IV • Continued support of NCOPE’s mission to advance the O&P residency program: • Identify the unique challenges for conducting research within the residency program. • Review and modify the residency program fundamentals. • Can if be combined into 12-18 months for O&P? • Can the individual be tested on the treatment plan? • Will changes reflect future direction of the profession? • NCOPE preparing project overview and timeline
