  1. "Men of whom the world was not worthy." Hebrews 11:38

  2. Judges 11, 9th Judge, JEPTHAH • Vv.1-3- Son of Gilead & a prostitute • Driven out by his brothers • Took up with “worthless” men, • i.e. men of no worth; poor, debtors, criminals • Lived in Tob, On frontier of northeastern Manasseh • Like David, w/mercenary army he defended Israel • Vv.4-11- Ammonites made war & brothers came begging • Needed (v.1) a mighty warrior and trained fighting men • Appointed Jepthah officially head/captain before God

  3. Judges 11, 9th Judge, JEPTHAH • Vv.12-17- Showed wisdom & restraint in dialog first • Explained Israel took no land of Moab, Edom or Ammon • Vv.18-28- Amorites the ones who attacked & lost land • They took Amorite’s land, not the Ammonite’s • They took the land that their God had give them • Claim of Ammon was 300 yrs late, w/the wrong nation • Vv.29-40- Spirit of the Lord moved Jepthah to fight • Vowed to offer up whatever met him at home • His daughter came out first, w/tamborines & dances • Daughter agreed to pay vow w/2 mo. condition • Wept, with friends, two months, for her virginity • Became an annual 4 day celebration in memorial.

  4. 12 Reasons Why Jepthah's Daughter Was NOT Offered as a "Burnt" Offering • Human sacrifice was unacceptable • Jepthah was a believer in God • Jepthah was/is an example of and to believers, Heb. 11:32, 39, gained app. • He was NOT rash, but careful, as demonstrated by his desire for dialog instead of rushing into war • His daughter respected God, 11:36 • Priests and public opinion would have opposed him Youshall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods. Deut. 12:31

  5. 12 Reasons Why Jepthah's Daughter Was NOT Offered as a "Burnt" Offering 7. He would not have been allowed to “judge” 6 more years. God doesn’t choose evil men to rule good. 8. His daughter wept for her virginity, not her life 9. Result of the vow? V.39- she knew no man 10. A daughter could be vowed to the Lord, i.e. given to serve, as w/daughters of Shiloh, Jud. 21:19-23 11. There WERE women who served at the tabernacle, Exodus 38:8; 1 Samuel 2:22 12. Would Israel have celebrated an “abomination” yearly? 11:40

  6. What Lessons Can We Learn? • When men (his brothers) turned on him, he didn’t turn on God • He used his talents to serve God’s people • He was not a grudge bearer, but was willing to let it go • He was not afraid to fall back on his dependency on God • He was a man of his word, even to his own hurt

  7. No need to guess about it… We have the testimony of God. Jepthah was one of the men of whom the world was not worthy. With him as our example… What kind of warrior might WE be?
