    6. Writing Strategy - Foldables Let’s make a four-door foldable for note taking. Fold your piece of paper as demonstrated by the presenter. Label the four doors, “Need,” “Design,” “Results,” and “Next Steps” as shown. As you listen today, please make the learning meaningful to you by taking notes on your foldable. KimKim

    8. PISD Schools Elementary – 34 Fifth Grade Centers – 2 Middle Schools (gr. 5-6) – 3 Intermediate Schools (gr. 6-8) – 10 High Schools – 5 Alternative – 4 Total Schools – 58 KimKim

    9. Ethnicity Hispanic – 76.5% Caucasian – 12.7% African-American – 7.5% Other – 3.3% Over 60% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. KimKim

    11. PISD’s ATCP Program 18th school year in 07-08 Has certified almost 1,500 teachers Many district administrators, counselors and specialists were ATCP trained 187 interns for 06-07 school year Audit commendations from TEA KimKim

    12. NEED for Literacy Seminar ATCP interns told us in past surveys that they needed more practical training. In response to this request, the PISD ATCP program implemented Bilingual Seminar for BIED teachers Sp. Ed. Seminar for SPED teachers But what about the rest of the interns? AngelaAngela

    13. ATCP Program Response ALL students need to be taught literacy skills in all content areas, especially in a district such as ours that has a large ELL population. The focus of the district is on Rigor and Relevance training, which incorporates literacy strategies for all content areas. So… AngelaAngela

    14. ATCP Program Response All interns not BIED or SPED have the option of taking the Literacy Seminar or a university graduate course. 48% chose Literacy Seminar for 06-07 (40 of 83) 54% chose Literacy Seminar for 07-08 (38 of 71) AngelaAngela

    19. Literacy Seminar DESIGN When we began our planning for the seminar, we wanted to consider the staff development standards. We designed the Literacy Seminar to be: Collaborative Ongoing Job-embedded Specific to the classroom Research-based AngelaAngela

    21. Literacy Seminar DESIGN Portfolio Samples Feel free to look through the portfolio samples on your tables. Some are from participants from 06-07 and some are from 07-08. AngelaAngela

    22. YOUR Training Design Ideas Take this moment to think about the following questions. Ask yourself: What kind of training design would work best for my situation? Who would attend? When would it be held? Who would present? Write your thoughts on the “DESIGN” door of your foldable. KimKim

    23. Post It/Highlighter Method This method sets a purpose for reading. It builds comprehension skills and aids in metacognition. It provides the opportunity for students to practice skimming, critical thinking and analysis as they read. AngelaAngela

    24. Post It/Highlighter Method How to use this strategy: Select your text: an article from a journal, newspaper or a primary source document that is reproducible. It has to be something your students can write on. Provide highlighters and post it notes. You will need highlighters and post it pads of the same colors (one highlighter and post it pad of each color you want to use in your legend) for each student. AngelaAngela

    25. Post It/Highlighter Method Decide on your purpose and develop a legend for the colors (see example). You can determine how many of each color you will require students to use. You tell the students they must have 3 examples of each color, for instance. Allow students plenty of opportunity to highlight according to the legend you have set and to write on the post it notes of the same colors in response to what they have highlighted. AngelaAngela

    26. Let’s Try the Post It/ Highlighter Method Find your highlighters and matching color post-it notepads. Use this legend for the “Intensive New Teacher Support Pays Off: A Return on Investment for Educators and Kids” article: Use a blue highlighter to highlight a quote that you find interesting in the article. Then write your response to that quote on a blue post it and stick it onto the article. Purple = a question I have about the text Pink = my opinion about something in the text Green = one fact that I found in the article Yellow = key words for a summary of the article Let’s share our findings… AngelaAngela

    27. Results Please note that our results in no way suggest a comparison of the university course to the Literacy Seminar. The Literacy Seminar is taught in the fall and the data is collected before the university course is offered the next summer. Our data is simply comparing information regarding interns who chose to take the Literacy Seminar to those who did not. AngelaAngela

    29. Final Reflections Survey Results 06-07 Let’s look at three questions from our Final Reflections Survey: Which session contributed most to higher student achievement? What is the most important thing you learned from the Literacy Seminar? Did you feel that your needs as a new teacher were met by this training? We will look at quantitative results for the first question, then read some of the actual responses from the interns for the second two questions. KimKim

Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Was there a significant difference in the student state assessment results between the teachers who took the Literacy Seminar and those who did not? No significant difference was found by our Data Dept. for various reasons: Small sample sizes No matching opportunities in some instances Differences in school cultures, populations and dynamics AngelaAngela

    35. Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities Exam All teachers that seek certification in the state of Texas must pass the PPR TExES exam that corresponds to their grade levels.     38. Professional Development Appraisal System All teachers in the state of Texas have a formal evaluation completed by a campus administrator. Did the interns who took the Literacy Seminar score higher on their PDAS evaluation compared to the interns that did not take the Literacy Seminar? AngelaAngela

Make connections between ideas expressed. Summarize or paraphrase key ideas/feelings. Extend and deepen thinking by posing questions, making suggestions (when asked), or sharing resources or knowledge (limited and strategic). Maintain nonjudgmental language. KimKim

    44. Interactive Journals In your journal… Write down a question you have. Write about one thing you learned during this presentation that you would like to put into practice. At the signal, trade your journal with an elbow partner. Write a personal response to your friend. Trade journals back to their original owners. KimKim
