  2. Seat of the collective municipality Hermeskeil is in the state Rhineland- Palatinate and is 540 meters above sea level. The population is 5698 people and its area is 30.85 square kilometres.

  3. Museum of Local History The museum gives you an insight into 30.000 years history of the region. Experience vivid displays that tell you the history of early settlements, medieval ages and the history of the town Hermeskeil. The museum shows how people lived here centuries ago. It gives you insights into farming, trade, jewellery craft and housework of former times.

  4. The churches and monastery Hermeskeil has two churches, a Catholic and a Protestant one. The Catholic Church was built in the year 1870 and is called Sankt Martinus Church. In the monastery live Franciscans. It was built in the year 1931.

  6. Open Air Swimming pool The outdoor swimming pool has a 100 m water chute and a basin that is 50 m long. There is also a pool with diving boards ( 1 to 5 m). In addition, playground and leisure facilities for volleyball, soccer, table-tennis and chess are available. Indoor swimming pool The indoor swimming pool has a 40 m water chute. To relax there are fountains, a whirlpool and a water massage.

  7. Cycling Path (Ruwer-Hochwald-Radweg): This cycle path takes you along an old railroad line. The track has been converted to a cycle path that will take you through the Ruwer Valley from Hermeskeil to Trier. With a total length of 50 km, the cycle path takes you along a picturesque landscape. It is a paradise for cyclists, skaters, and ramblers.

  8. Winter Sports: Hermeskeil offers plenty of opportunities for winter sports: skiing, cross-country, skating, or toboggan runs.

  10. Castle Grimburg: The castle was built in 1190 by the archbishop of Trier. It served as seat of over 40 townships. In the 14th century town ordinances and privileges were granted. In 1522 castle Grimburg was conquered by Franz von Sickingen. In the following years witch trials were held here. In 1978 partial reconstruction of the castle began and today visualizes the dimensions of the castle. The castle is now home of the "Castle and Witch Museum".

  11. Air Museum The Air Museum near Hermeskeil is the largest private aircraft museum in Europe. It was founded in 1973 and since then it has always been supplemented. The exhibition would like to give the visitors an insight into the technology of aviation: the exhibits show historic gliders (Lilienthal) down to modern jet planes. On over 80 000 square metres of exhibition grounds and four exhibition halls you can see about one hundred original planes and helicopters like the VC 10 from Abu Dhabi, the Mil Mi 6 from Russia or the Saab Viggen from Sweden. A historic monument is the `Super Constellation`aeroplane that flew former Grman Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to Moskau in 1955. In addition a broad range of motors, jet engines and technical details are on display.

  12. The four exhibition halls give place to about forty planes. So the history of aviation can be seen from the past until the present. The café inside the plane If you want to see a 70 metre long Concorde, visit the plane exhibition near Hermeskeil. Inside the Concorde there is a café where you are offered a lot of different snacks served by stewardesses. There are enough seats for one hundred and fifty persons inside the café.

  13. Hunsrück Region Because of its location south of the Moselle, west of the Rhine, north of the Nahe and east of the Saar the Hunsrück is close to the best sights in Rhineland-Palatinate. There are lofty heights in the middle of a large, unique riverscape. Frankfurt Hahn Airport is situated right in the middle of this beautiful region. The Erbeskopf is the highest mountain in the Hunsrück. It has a height of 816,32 m over NN. It is a popular destination for tourists because you can do many different leisure activities there for example go skiing or snowboarding in winter, play mini-golf, go for a walk. The region near Thalfang is also a good place to recover because of the extremely high air quality, one of the best air qualities in whole Western Europe. In this region there are many sources and it is popular with its very good and healthy mineral water. It is also famous for its valuable biotopes with rare animal species and plants.

  15. Some information about Trier: Country: Germany State: Rhineland-Palatinate Area: 117.14 km² Population: 103.518 River: Mosel Sights: Trier is the oldest city in Germany. With its sights it´s on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage.

  16. Porta Nigra • The Porta Ngra was built in 180 before Christ. Porta • Nigra means the black gate. In former times it served as a • city gate. • The gate was made up of many big freestone slabs. The • biggest one has a weight of six tons.

  17. 2. Amphitheater: The Area was built in the 2nd century A. D. for cruel games with gladiators and animals. It has a seating capacity of about 20.000. Today it is used for occasional open-air-concerts. Underneath the arena is a vast cellar from Roman times. There the prisoners were sentenced to death because they had to fight with exotic wild animals like African lions or Asian tigers.

  18. 3. Imperial Baths: Going to the baths was an important part of Roman life: Over 1600 years ago, the Romans built one of the grandest and most impressive baths in the world: The Imperial Baths. There you can get a feeling for history. When you enter the Imperial Baths you will first come to the hot water bath. The incoming cold water was heated in altogether six boiler rooms. The 40° hot water was then conducted into the three semicircular pools for the bathers.

  19. 4. Basilika: The Basilika was the throne room of Emperor Constantine. It´s the largest surviving single-room structure from Roman times. It is 27 m wide, 33 m high and 67 m long. Today it´s used as a Protestant church.

  20. 5. The Cathedral The present Cathedral stands on top of a former Constantinian Palace. After Constantine's last visit to Trier in A.D. 328/9, the palace was leveled in 330 and replaced by the largest Christian church in Antiquity, about fou times as big as the present-day church and covering the area of the Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady, the Cathedral Square, the adjoining garden, and the houses almost up to the market. There are many other interesting sights e.g. the Main Market and the Karl Marx House As one of the largest wine-growing communities in the area of Mosel/Saar/ Ruwer (names of rivers) , the classic Riesling wine area, Trier is considered the cradle of German wine culture.
