Attack Aircraft Operations • Primary types of attack support missions • Air Interdiction • Close Air Support • Armed Reconnaissance • Theater Missile Defense • Three major areas of JSTARS support • Attacks to delay and disrupt the movement of enemy forces • Attacks designed to quickly destroy large numbers of vehicles that an army uses for high tempo offensive/defensive operations • Attacks to destroy enemy nodes in the rear area

  3. Air Interdiction Mission • Air Interdiction (AI): Operations that destroy, neutralize, or delay the enemy before its capabilities can be effectively brought to bear against friendly forces.

  4. Close Air Support (CAS) Mission • CAS is action against hostile targets in close proximity to friendly forces and require detailed integration with fire and movement of those forces. • Joint STARS is assuming a much larger role for CAS missions • Provide mover information to TACPs and FAC-As • Relay target brief (9-Line) to attack assets in TAC-A Role • CAS differs from AI in one very significant way • Requires a much higher degree of coordination

Armed Reconnaissance Mission • Armed Reconnaissance: • Primary purpose is to locate and attack targets of opportunity. • Normally beyond the AO where coordination with ground forces is not normally required • Joint STARS will normally be used in a target development role before the armed reconnaissance aircraft arrive in the target area • Generating target locations • Determine size. • Once in the target area, Joint STARS can provide direction to the aircraft on an immediate basis

  7. Armed Reconnaissance Mission (Cont.) • Target types normally differ from those of AI and CAS in that they are removed from the AO. Examples of AR targets are: • Command Posts • SAM Sites • Surface to Surface Missile Batteries possibly moving to another location • Convoys Re-supplying Forward Elements • Armed Reconnaissance differs from AI and CAS in another area. AI and CAS missions have specific targets. AR missions designed to prowl or troll for targets

Theater Missile Defense (TMD) • Theater Missile Defense: The identification, integration, and employment of forces supported by theater and national capabilities to detect, identify, locate, track, minimize the effects of, and/or destroy enemy TMs. • On the ground or in-flight • Ground based launchers and supporting Infrastructure • TM-capable ships (in port or at sea) • Enemy aircraft armed with air-to-surface missiles

JSTARS TMD Role • Joint STARS Role in TMD • Obtain and disseminate timely intelligence on fixed and mobile theater missile target locations • IPB and current intelligence provide indications of possible target areas • Search high probability TM operating and deployment areas • Detect, identify, locate and track TM launchers

Mission of JSTARS (Cont.) • Provide surveillance, target detection, and tracking required to develop an understanding of the enemy situation • Delay, disrupt, and destroy the offensive/defensive momentum of enemy forces based on • The Joint Force Commander’s overall objectives • The Joint Force Land Component Commander’s (JFLCC) scheme of maneuver • The Joint Force Air Component Commander’s (JFACC) air campaign guidance

JSTARS Mission Requirements • The joint force land component commander (JFLCC) designates the corps commander or specific unit to be supported • Once designated, they determine the required coverage times and radar priorities • JFACC then determines the orbit locations and number of E-8Cs required (air CCs also use this info for their operations) • Within the AOR, JSTARS detects, locates, classifies, tracks and supports attack of targets
