  3. SCENARIO • Massive Earthquake • Affected Were >> > • Road Tunnels • Bridges • Dams • Buildings • Communications etc. Francois Botha ZS6BUU

  4. THE PLAN • SANDF request Hamnet to assist • Communications Stretched • Approval obtained from ICASA • To test 20, 40 and 80 Metres propagation under “normal” conditions Francois Botha ZS6BUU

  5. DEPLOYMENT • 25 Hams & Signal Unit operators deployed • Vast area - +/- 4000 Sq Kms • Ops Room established • Radio Conditions – fair (solar storm day before exercise) Francois Botha ZS6BUU

DEBRIEFWEAKNESSES • Lack of alternative frequencies • Regulatory Request required • Resources not always used effectively • Interference on frequencies • Lack of adequate maps of area • Weak signals – Solar flare day before • Military equipment incomplete • Antennas not always effective Francois Botha ZS6BUU

OPPORTUNITIES • Sitrep reports lacked key words • Plotter boards in Ops room would help • Lack of Headphones in poor reception areas • Improve Antennas • Check all equipment • Adequate personnel in Ops room • Improve terminology between operators • Combined frequencies would help Francois Botha ZS6BUU

  9. COMMENTS • Improve training on both sides • More exercises will improve experience • Enjoyed by all concerned • Pressure in using correct radio procedure • Integrate Military and Civilian communication capacity • Hamnet should promote their usefulness more effectively Francois Botha ZS6BUU
