  1. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT IN THE SCHOOL LIBRARY

  2. A Program… …can be defined as “a set of planned, interrelated activities designed to achieve a specified goal or goals and which requires time and other resources for implementation”* *A Model for Program Development and Evaluation” by James Jacob

  3. Jacobs called for… “…more educational programming to be initiated at the local school level. The model to be proposed represents a stronger leaning toward local school authority and initiative than has been the case.” Jacobs, p 15 – 16.

  4. Four stages of the model • Goal Setting: moving from needs to goals • Program Planning: operational goals • Implementation: management and assessment of progress • Summative Education or Evaluation

  5. INFORMATION POWER* *AASL, 1998

  6. WHAT IS A LIBRARY PROGRAM? • It can be anything that happens in a school library that involves: • goal-setting • planning • implementation • evaluation

  7. Goal-setting and planning… • To broaden the collection to include a variety of formats that support teaching and learning and reflect the requirements of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks* *Goal #1 – Chelmsford Public Schools Long Range Plan

  8. Implementation… •   1.1 catalog all non-print resources • 1.2 increase the currency of the print collection • 1.3 train students and staff in the use of online resources • 1.4 obtain approval of updated Library Media Center Policies

  9. Evaluation… http://www.mslma.org/whoweare/rubric.pdf Library Program Evaluation Rubrics from the Massachusetts School Library Media Association (MSLMA)

  10. So, what am I going to write? • Make this paper meaningful to you • Include the basic stages of planning as described in the Jacobs article • Choose a goal or goals that you would like to implement and describe the stages of implementation.

  11. Additionally… …it can be a paper about program planning in general.

  12. Or, more specifically, your program planning paper could address… • …motivating the students in your school to read more! • Set Goals • Plan Program • Implement Program • Evaluate • Just one example of many!
