Point-by-Point • The essay compares or contrasts the two subjects feature for feature. • Every time something is written about one subject, something is written immediately on the same point about the second subject.
Block • In this method, the writer tells everything about one subject in one paragraph. • In the next paragraph, the writer tells everything about the second subject.
Combination • In this method, the writer may discuss similarities (or differences) point-by-point and differences (or similarities) in the block method or vice versa. • The combination method adds variety to longer essays.
In Your Essay… • Combination method: • 1st Body: discusses the Pilgrims’ hardships & perseverance. • 2nd Body: discusses Equiano’s hardships & perseverance. • 3rd Body: discusses point-by-point the Pilgrims’ choice to journey as opposed to Equiano’s imposed journey.
