  2. “Students who read the most are the best at every part of school – reading, writing, researching, content-specific knowledge, all of it.” Stephen Krashen How families can help: •Make time for reading and hold your student accountable. •30 minutes a day for grades 3,4,5 •Read together. •Say “tell me about ...(what you’re reading, the character, plot, details etc.).” •Ask about the library books your child chose this week. Math Expressions Homework & Remembering workbook will be sent home as  a resource for families to use at their discretion

  3. Academics • Humanities:  Integrating Language Arts Program (Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop) with Social Studies • STEM Program: Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math • Daily Specials, FLES 2x/week, Counseling, MOSAIC • Field Trips

Volunteering • Complete and return the Volunteer Application Form and Confidentiality Agreement to the front office or email tameka.wilds@apsva.us. • After October 15, you will receive an email for a Safe School Training. Complete this training ASAP. • Oakridge will notify when your application is complete and you can start volunteering. • If you plan on being a chaperone on a field trip, you must complete the volunteer training. • Questions or need help? School Supplies • If you would like to contribute school supplies, we welcome them! • Oakridge school supply donation list is available on the Oakridge website and on the following slide. • The school will order any additional supplies that classrooms and students need • If you have headphones for your child to use in school, feel free to send them in

School Supplies • 4 dry-erase markers • 2 highlighters • 2 composition notebooks • 2 plastic two pocket folders • 2 spiral wide-ruled notebooks • 1 package of lined loose paper • 2 dozen pencils • 2 blue pens • 4 pink erasers • 6 glue sticks • 1 box of tissues • washable markers • 1 package of colored pencils • 2  boxes of crayons

Breakfast • This year, breakfast is delivered to individual classrooms before the start of the school day • Available for any students who would like to eat breakfast at school • Costs $1.60 (no extra cost for students who receive free and reduced lunch) Ms. Haeberle’s Class Room 223 703-228-5840 Laura.Haeberle@apsva.us

  9. Weekly Communication • The 3rd grade team will share weekly updates via email • 3rd grade will share updates related to instruction, field trips, and any special events • Emails will come out the same day as the Oakridge Update (weekly parent email) • Look for it on Monday afternoons!

  10. iPads • Students receive iPads in grade 2, use them for remainder of APS career • Students use same iPad as last year; new students will be issued an iPad • iPads will stay at school this year, unless parents request that it come home Ms. Haeberle’s Class Room 223 703-228-5840 Laura.Haeberle@apsva.us • Will be used for: • Math practice (apps/websites) • Reading ebooks • Writing/typing practice • Research for projects in class
