  1. Save vs. Save As Beth McKelvey

  2. Saving a NEW file If you are saving a file that has NEVER been saved before, you can use SAVE or SAVE AS. They work the same way. They both open the SAVE AS window. The SAVE AS window allows you to choose WHERE to save the file and what FILE NAME to give it.

  3. Re-saving a file If you want to save a file that you have already saved, use SAVE. There are 2 exceptions to that rule: • 1. If you want to save it with a new NAME and/or in a new LOCATION. Then you need to use SAVE AS. • 2. If you open an email attachment that you sent yourself or someone sent you, and you want to save it, you must use SAVE AS.

  4. Example 1 • Let’s say you saved your file, Sally’s Superstore, on your flash drive. You just opened the file, and changed the font size and added a new column to the spreadsheet. Now you want to save the changes to the file on your flash drive. • Do you use SAVE or SAVE AS?

  5. Example 2 • Let’s say you saved your file, Sally’s Superstore, on your computer at school. You emailed it to yourself as an attachment and you just opened the attachment and revised it at home. You want to save the new version. • Do you use SAVE or SAVE AS?

  6. Example 3 • Let’s say you have never saved your file, Sally’s Superstore, and you want to save it now. • Do you use SAVE or SAVE AS?

  7. Example 4 • What if you’ve saved Sally’s Superstore on your computer at school, but you want to save it on your flash drive so you can work on it at home. • Do you use SAVE or SAVE AS?

  8. Example 5 • Let’s say you saved your file, Sally’s Superstore, on your flash drive while you were at school. You emailed it to yourself as an attachment and you just opened the attachment and revised it at home. You want to save the new version. • Do you use SAVE or SAVE AS?

  9. Summary • The first time you save a new file, you can use either Save or Save As. • If your file is OPEN and you want to save it with a new name or in a different place, you must use Save As.
