  5. Different Types of Volunteers “People have different reasons for volunteering. To retain volunteers you need to understand their motivations for volunteering and how you can embrace them.” - Museum Galleries Scotland 1. Short Term/Placements • Defined time-frame and purpose • Looking to deliver a specific task • Possible learning outcomes and skills • Could last between approx. 3-6 months 2. Finding Volunteers - Working with Partners • Sea Cadets – general activities at the ship and around Victoria Dock • The Inclusion Group – helping with garden area and some ship maintenance • University of Dundee – student placements around marketing, event management and digital/IT work • University of St Andrews – 3-month student placements working on exhibitions, museum outreach and collections management HMS Unicorn Victoria Dock, Dundee, DD1 3BP www.frigateunicorn.org

Volunteering at Unicorn • Recruitment • Providing description of positions/roles & info about organisation • Application/registration forms • Informal chats/meetings with potential volunteers • Induction • Welcome, introduce to team and show around ship • Health & safety • Basic induction training (e.g. how things work) • Training • Could be customer service, fire training, museum handling etc. • Retaining • Making volunteers feel valued/recognised, conducting evaluations and ensuring a fun, sociable atmosphere HMS Unicorn Victoria Dock, Dundee, DD1 3BP www.frigateunicorn.org
