  1. Common R&D for astroparticle physics: Activities of ApPEC and ASPERA Bernard Revaz and Maurice Bourquin CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  2. Who we are: • ApPEC: Committee of 12 European scientific agencies founded in 2001 aiming at : • Promoting and facilitating cooperation in the European astroparticle physics community; • Developing long term strategies and offering advice to national funding agencies; • Expressing the views of the astroparticle physics community in international forums; • Establishing a system of peer-review assessment for projects where ApPEC members are involved. • ERA-Net: Instrument for the coordination and cooperation of national and regional programmes in Europe • Implemented as a Specific programme within 6th-7th Framework Programme • ASPERA: ERA-Net for astroparticle physics, lifetime July 2006 – July 2009 • Objective: Coordinate and encourage Astroparticle Physics in Europe; • Members:17 national funding agencies in Europe providing funding in Astroparticle Physics. • => Driving force of ApPEC CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  3. ASPERA Goals Roadmap Create a scientific roadmapfor Astroparticle Physics (reference documents for the national agencies) Information, guidance Compile a common information system on funding mechanisms for Astroparticle Physics in Europe. Propose uniform processing and evaluation schemes for all types of joint transnational proposals Provide guidance for national agencies to align resources in order to fund large APP transnational research programme. R&D Assess and identify innovativeResearch and Developmentfields Develop a model call for common R&D proposals. Large Infrastructures Propose common process for benchmarking large European Astroparticle Physics infrastructures Identify possible links amongst existing infrastructures (e.g. gravitational antennas, neutrino telescopes, gamma ray telescopes, space and ground cosmic ray facilities). Enable pan-European collaborations for the next generation of large scale infrastructures. CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  4. ASPERA Goals Roadmap Create a scientific roadmapfor Astroparticle Physics, linking it with the more general European scientific infrastructure roadmap, as planned by EU structures (for instance ESFRI). Information, guidance, outreach Compile a common information system on funding mechanisms for Astroparticle Physics in Europe. Propose uniform processing and evaluation schemes for all types of joint transnational proposals, which can be agreed by the national agencies. Provide guidance and possible frameworks for national agencies to align some of their resources in order to fund large Astroparticle Physics transnational research programme. R&D Assess and identify which innovativeResearch and Developmentfields are inherently convergent and are most suitable for joint research projects with high European added value. Coordinate an examine selected translational R&D domains with a view to develop a model call for R&D proposals. Large Infrastructures Propose common for benchmarking large European Astroparticle Physics infrastructures Identify possible links amongst existing infrastructures (e.g. gravitational antennas, neutrino telescopes, gamma ray telescopes, space and ground cosmic ray facilities). Enable pan-European collaborations for the next generation of large scale infrastructures. CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  5. ASPERA: output reports Survey of present APP activities Roadmap and priorities (Roadmap I and II) Legal barriers Legal structures of collaborations Evaluation schemes R&D CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  6. Process for common support to Astroparticle R&D in Europe • Roadmap for APP in Europe phase 1: document available on internet • Roadmap priorities: document to be discussed in Brussels in Sept. 08 • R&D for APP: priorities to be defined in October Amsterdam workshop • Elaboration of a European common evaluation scheme for large APP infrastructures and R&D (in progress) • Setting up common calls by ApPEC • Implementing common calls of ApPEC (beginning 2009-2010) CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  7. Present status Preparation of a document in view of the October Amsterdam R&D workshop (28.10.08) Content: describe the R&D activities and set priorities Preliminary document, ready for comments by the community Drafted under the responsibility of ASPERA by various contributors Its aim 1) Serve as reference document for national agencies Summary added to the Roadmap II 2) Set a frame of activities for the R&D call CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  8. Your homework • 1) R&D ASPERA document • Give us your comments • Make sure your activities are well represented • Propose priorities • 2) Preparation of the Amsterdam meeting (28.10.08) • Scientists involved in R&D for astroparticle physics should be present • Invite your industrial partners CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  9. Structure of the “R&D for APP” document • Detector elements for astroparticle physics • Photodetectors for HEAP and large undergrounds detectors • (MAGIC, CTA) • Cryodetectors • (DM activities ETHZ) • Optical elements, lasers and suspensions for gravitational wave antennas • Astroparticle Physics detectors in space • Distributed Electronic and Acquisition systems for Astroparticle Physics CHIPP Workshop on Detector R&D 11-12 June - University of Geneva

  10. II. Materials for Astroparticle physics Noble liquids for dark matter and double beta decay Scintillators for neutrino physics and proton decay Analysis on Rare isotope preparation for Astroparticle Physics (DM activities ETHZ) III.
