One-Party Rule • Dictator is head of a privileged ruling party, whose members hold all posts in the Government • All other parties are Illegal. • Elections may be held, but only ruling party candidates are allowed to stand and results may be rigged.
Primacy of the State • Rights of the individual are considered to be less important than aims of government policy. • It is considered to be the duty of the individual to serve the state.
Economic Control • State control of the whole economy or important elements of the economy
Secret Police • Extensive network of secret police and informants persecutes opponents of the regime • Torture, imprisonment without trial, and murder are carried out by the secret police to create fear among the public and discourage dissent.
Censorship • All media content is checked by the ruling party before broadcast or publication • Negative stories about state policy or the ruling party are suppressed; positive stories are exaggerated • Artists whose work is considered to be undesirable are banned • All foreign cultural influences are suppressed.
Propaganda • Ruling party presents the dictator and state policy in positive terms through party-controlled newspapers, radio stations, films and other publications. • Opponents of the regime are presented in negative and derogatory terms.
