  2. Chinese Surnames姓 女 + 生 = 姓 It is Made up of two parts: Female and Birth indicating that is a woman who gives birth. This is an implication that in primitive times, China was a matriarchal society. Children knew who their mother was but not their father. Matriarchal society: The mother was the central figure of the family. Children born of the same mother formed a group called the maternal tribe. To avoid intermarriages within the tribe, the surname became the title of the clan. In the matriarchal society, children took their mother’s surname. Those with the same surname were not allowed to marry. Many ancient surnames carry the radical, such as 姚, 姜, 姬
