Categories of Effects Maths Dx [Best viewed in Full Screen Slide Show]
Introduction Hi, I’m Maths Dx from a far away galaxy on the Internet. This lesson is for Week 3 of Introduction to Music Production at Coursera.org. Today, I will be covering the topic as concisely as possible. All the salient points of the topic are presented so that it is also an easy-reference for later use– you can also download it. There are 3 categories of audio effects and each of these are related to the three principles of sound which we touched on in Lesson 1.
1. Dynamic Effects • They are related to amplitude and automatically control volume based on the material over time. • Examples of Dynamic Effects are: • Compressors • Limiters • Expanders • Gates
2. Delay Effects • These are related to the propagation of sound. • They add a slight delay to the signal and tend to represent the illusion of the space that one is in • Examples of Delay Effects are: • Reverbs • Delays • Phasers • Flangers • Choruses
3. Filter Effects • These control the timbre of the sound • A filter effect will amplify, pass or attenuate some frequency ranges based on its application • Examples of Filter Effects are: • High Pass Filters • Low Pass Filters • Band Pass Filters • Parametric EQ • Graphic EQ
Summary • There are 2 signal flows that can be applied to these categories of effects so that an efficiency of processing is maintained • Signal Flow 1: A sub-mix of a family of tracks is routed to a single track which is then processed as a unit with the relevant Effects • Signal Flow 2: Using a Send and Return structure, the same effect can be applied to multiple tracks but in different amounts • More on these will be covered in future lessons • And finally, a summary of today’s lesson: Thank you for reading through this and I hope that this will be a useful reference as part of your music production.
