  2. International Law Law that governs relationships between independent nations. An Example: Canada has entered into agreements with other countries, such as extradition treaties. This means that agreements have been made to arrange to send persons to other countries to be tried for crimes that have been committed there.
  3. Domestic Law Laws that govern activities within a nation’s borders (within Canada). An example: Canada has many laws formed from three sources. Citizens of Canada are expected to abide by these laws even if they disagree with them.

  6. Substantive Law Law that defines the rights, duties and obligations of citizens and governments. (Considered the “content” of the Law) An example: You have a right to own and protect property, it is considered your duty / obligation to remain at the scene of an accident, etc.
  7. Procedural Law Law that describes the methods of enforcing the rights, duties, and obligations found in substantive law. (the proper steps law enforcement must take) An example: Procedural law refers to gathering evidence properly, following the legal requirements for a lawful arrest, and adhering to correct trail procedures. When procedures are followed, people are treated fairly.

  9. Public Law Public Law regulates the relationship between the government and its citizens. An example: Liquor Control Act, labour Board, Worker’s Compensation Board, Human Rights Commission
  10. Private Law (Civil Law) Private Law are laws that govern the relationship between private individuals, and between individuals and organizations. An example: Wills, estates, property law, family law, etc

  12. Constitutional Law Constitutional law is the highest form of law in Canada, it can override (prevail over or counteract) both Statute law and common law. This is a body of laws dealing with the distribution and exercise of government powers.
  13. Administrative Law This law refers to the many government departments and boards that play a role in regulating the relationship between people and government agencies.
  14. Criminal Law Criminal law prohibits and punishes behaviour that causes harm to others, such as murder, robbery, or assault. All offenses / crimes are listed and described in the Criminal Code of Canada and in federal statutes such as the Controlled Drug and Substance Act, Youth Justice Act, etc.
  15. Tort Law This is a branch of private law that deals with people who hold individuals or organizations responsible for damage caused to them by either an accident or deliberate actions. An example: Woman seeks $1.5 million for damages after finding a finger in her burger”

  17. Contract Law Contract law deals with everyday transactions in which people purchase or provide goods and services. This law enforces agreements between people and businesses. Example: Sale of Goods Act
  18. Family Law Family law covers such matters as marriage, property division, custody, and support of children and divorce.
  19. Wills & Estates This is a branch of private law that deals with the division and distribution of property after death.
  20. Property Law This type of law regulates ownership rights in all property including ownership and transfer of real estate.
  21. Employment Law This law covers relationships between employers and employees. There are laws in place to protect both parties. We also have laws to protect children under certain ages from being forces to work, restriction the number of hours employees are to work, minimum wage requirements, hiring and firing practices, protection from discrimination, safety rules and regulating unions and their activities
