When do we use colons? • To introduce a quotation, a sentence, or a question • Directly a voice in the corner rang out wild and clear: “I’ve got him! I’ve got him!” ~Mark Twain, Roughing It • To introduce a list • I’ve got all the proper equipment for the project: scissors, yarn, glue, and construction paper.
DON’T use colons in these situations… • Between a verb and its object • INCORRECT-- Max has: a snowmobile, an ATV, and a canoe • CORRECT– Max has plenty of toys: a snowmobile, an ATV, and a canoe. • Between a preposition and its object. • INCORRECT– Dad watches a TV show about: cooking wild game. • CORRECT– Dad watches a TV show about a weird subject: cooking wild game.
When do we use semi-colons? • To join or set off two independent clauses • A semi-colon can join two independent clauses together—it cannot be used between an independent and dependent clause! • We waited all day for the game to start; after three hours of rain delays, it finally began! • I did not call myself a poet; I told people I wrote poems. • I wanted to go to the game; it was the last one of the season. • I am faced with a difficult decision; however, I will make the decision that is best for me.
