IC0023: Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas

This policy ensures that all individuals entering the hospital's designated surgical and invasive procedure areas wear approved attire to protect patients and staff. Scrubs are provided by the hospital and must be laundered daily. Home laundering is not permitted.

Policy IC0023 Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY” All persons who enter semi-restricted area of the hospital’s designated surgical and invasive procedure areas wear approved attire to protect both patients and perioperative personnel. Onlyhospital issued and laundered scrubs are worn in Operating Rooms (OR)/procedural areas.

The restricted area includes the operating and other rooms in which surgical or other invasive procedures are performed. (AORN) “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY”

Policy IC0023 Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY” Semi-restricted Area: The peripheral support areas of the surgical/procedural suite The area may include storage areas for equipment and clean and sterile supplies; work areas for processing instruments; sterilization processing room(s); scrub sink areas; corridors leading from the unrestricted area (i.e. Nursing stations) to the restricted areas of the suite Access to the semi-restricted area is limited to authorized personnel and patients accompanied by authorized personnel. (AORN)

Policy IC0023 Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas Transition Area: Traffic is permitted to allow movement of personnel from unrestricted to semi-restricted or restricted areas Personnel may enter in street clothing and exit into the semi-restricted or restricted area in surgical attire “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY”

  12. Policy IC0023 Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas Not Acceptable OR/Procedural Scrub Attire is not to be worn to and from work or between facilities. When wearing OR/procedural scrub attire in the UNRESTRICTED areas, a tied closed cover gown or a clean and buttoned lab coat is required. “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY”

  14. Policy IC0023 Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas All persons must cover their head and facial hair when in the semi-restricted and restricted areas-NO EXCEPTIONS. Hair coverings must cover ALL facial hair, sideburns, and hair at the nape of the neck. Only hospital supplied head coverings are worn. Knight hoods and masks are required for facial hair If Knight Hood and mask do not cover all facial hair, a bouffant cap is used to contain any remaining exposed hair “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY”

Policy IC0023 Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY” Masks are worn in the presence of scrubbed individuals, or when open sterile supplies or equipment is present Masks must cover the nose and mouth completely, fitting snugly beneath the chin Masks are available over each scrub station and are changed after each use

Policy IC0023 Attire for Surgical and Procedural Areas All head and neck jewelry with the exception of stud earrings must be removed- NO EXCEPTIONS Stud earrings may remain only if they are covered at all times Bracelets and loose fitting watches are not permitted Rings and watches are not worn by those who perform a surgical scrub “THE STONY BROOK WAY IS MY WAY”
