Need for increased commitment for implementation – sharing of information – defining common targets and goals- future action Opportunity to mobilize support- nationally and internationally Do we need a CONFERENCE? World…? Second….?? General Assembly is discussing wording- and purpose Why a World Conference?

  4. Conclude the Yokohama review- updating framework on disaster reduction for 21st Century Identify activities and means of implementation Share best practices- lessons learnt in context of sustainable development Increase awareness – more implementation Objectives (GA)

  5. Increased endorsement- commitment (declaration) Targets and framework (guiding principles) Programme of action- future course and strategic direction- identify means of implementation Outcome

  6. 1- Intergovernmental process- pending on decision in GA __________________________ 2-Knowledge & technical exchange – parallel events _______________________________ 3- Public participation – promoting awareness Format

  7. Piggy-backing on existing meetings, conferences, reviews…. Regional Thematic Pending ones…. Task Force members to take the lead as appropriate Preparatory meetings

General Assembly draft resolution: Open-ended intergovernmental Prep Com in charge of reviewing organizational and substantive preparation, rules of procedures Bureau 5 representatives Member States ISDR Secretariat coordinate prep activities- full support from UN and relevant orgs and host Country IATF, Member States and other UN bodies, organizations, major groups to take active part Preparatory process- GA

  9. Yokohama review- identify gaps and analysis of achievements/needs Advice on Framework, goals, targets Guidance on Conference programme and structure Through task groups and in plenary, and in regional settings Individual TF members and their organizations to get involved IATF roleSupport to Secretariat
