  1. ~ RESPECT ~ What is it? Are there different types? How do you get and give it?

  2. Discuss with your neighbors what respect it. Write down how you would define respect: 1. _________________________________________ __________________________________________ • In light of your discussion and definition, • who controls who you respect, the amount/type • of respect you give, and the way in which • you show respect? _________________________________________

  3. 2. I’d like to give you a definition of respect: (Fill in the blanks as I say it out loud.) A way of _____________________ about and _____________________ to someone or something with ________ courtesy and recognition. thinking responding due

  4. 3. Notice this definition focuses on thinking and responding. Who controls what you think? Who controls how you respond? Ultimately YOU do!! If someone else seems to control those things, work at taking your power back. Allow chosen others to influence you, but not control you. It can take a lot of work to identify and separate influence vs. control, but it will be worth it!

  5. Reflect on what we’ve just discussed. Now how would you define respect: _________________________________________ _________________________________________ • Now who would you say controls who you respect, the amount/type of respect you give, and the way in which you show respect? • _________________________________________ 4. You do!

  6. 5. I’d like to discuss four types or categories of respect: Respect for all Human Beings Respect for Yourself Respect for Authority Respect that is Earned

  7. Rememberthe definition I gave you said “responding with DUE courtesy and recognition.” What does it mean when we say someone is “due” something? Discuss with your neighbors what “due” means and write your ideas here: 6.

  8. 7. Which of these categories contain people that are DUE respect? Let’s circle them: Respect for all Human Beings Respect for Yourself Respect for Authority Respect that is Earned

  9. 8. Respect for all Human Beings • Every human being is due, or deserves, respect. • This type of respect isn’t earned – it is automatically due them just because they’re a human being. • Remember YOU control respecting them; it’s based on your thoughts and responses, not anything they do or say. • Whether you know or don’t know, like or dislike, agree or disagree with someone, you can respect them.

  10. 9. Respect for all Human Beings • When respecting other people it’s important to…. • * Put their feelings above your intentions. • * Allow others to have different opinions than yours. • * Allow others to make choices you don’t agree with. • Discuss with your neighbors and write down ways you can show due respect to other people, even when you don’t agree with them or like them:

  11. 10. Respect for Yourself • Have you ever thought about deserving respect from YOURSELF?!? • This type doesn’t have to be earned either. You don’t have to be “good enough” or meet any expectation before respecting yourself. No one is perfect, but we can constantly learn and work on improving ourselves. • Discuss with your neighbors ways you can show respect to yourself and write them down here: Add these if you did write them: Do your best. Be your best.

  12. Respect for Authority 11. • Positions of authority in life are due, or deserve, respect. • This type of respect isn’t earned – it automatically comes with the position. • Remember YOU control respecting them; it’s based on your thoughts and responses, not what they do or say. • Whether you like or dislike, agree or disagree with them, you can and should still respect them.

  13. Respect for Authority 12. • Discuss with your neighbors and write down some of these positions and how you can show respect to them, even if you don’t like or agree with them: • How to show respect: • Positions: Add any of these you didn’t write: Parents Teachers Police Elders Bosses Add any of these you didn’t write: Listen Obey/follow rules Tone of voice Attitude

  14. Respect for Authority 13. Respect for authority does not always come naturally to us. We want to be in charge and do things our own way! Respecting authority by obeying them and going through the proper channels when we disagree is a skill we must work at and learn to do. When we do, however, life goes much smoother for us! • EVERYONE has authority over them – old, young, men, women, workers, bosses, etc. It’s a part of life, and learning to respect authority is vital skill to • a successful life.

  15. Respect that is Earned 14. This type of respect is like the icing on the cake! Earned respect is extra on top of the due respect that every human being (including yourself!) and every authority figure should automatically be getting. • When people are kind, fair, honest, reliable, loyal, do a good job, etc. they often earn this extra respect from others. • Can you think of people in your life that have earned extra respect from you? Write what they did to earn it.

  16. Summary Points 15. • YOU are the source of respect you show to others, not them. YOU control your thoughts about and your responses to people, and this is where respect comes from. • The old saying “Respect is Earned” isn’t entirely true. It can be earned, but it is not ONLY earned. • EVERYONE is due your courtesy and deserves basic respect, or kindness, just because they’re a human being. This respect makes life bearable.

  17. Summary Points 16. • YOU deserve respect! You deserve the benefits that come from being and doing your best. This type of respect • builds your self-esteem and self confidence. • All authority figures are due your respect. It doesn’t • matter whether you like them or agree with them; they automatically deserve respect because of their position.

  18. Summary Points 17. • Freely give to others and strive to get for yourself that extra, earned respect. • Look for the good in others and freely give extra earned respect to those you feel deserve it. • This earned respect makes life much more joyful! 

  19. Summary Points 18. • I’m looking forward to year filled with mutual respect! Why? Just think! • If we respect each other as humans, the year will be bearable, even for those who don’t like school! • If we each respect ourselves, we will become more confident individuals as the year goes on. • If we each respect the authority figures in our lives, the year will go by smoothly. • If we each work on giving and earning extra respect, the year will be full of joy!
