  1. Adventures in Membrane Transport

  2. Adventure #1: Salt, Water, and Elodea In water (tap or distilled) In salt water Elodea salt: http://web.grcc.cc.mi.us/biosci/pictdata/bi103/elodeaplas.jpg Elodea water: dept.kent.edu/projects/ cell/INTRO2.HTM Elodea Shrinking Diagram: http://web.grcc.cc.mi.us/biosci/pictdata/bi103/elodeaplas.jpg

  3. Remember where water is most concentrated – It moves via diffusion (osmosis) from high to low

  4. Boiled Live Adventure #2: Transport and Yeast Cresyl blue diffuses easily across cell memmbranes, but can only be removed from a cell via active transport.

  5. Adventure #3: Beet Membranes What does soap do to membranes? Remember what membranes are made of. Soap “takes grease out of your way…” Why did the red pigment come out of the cells?

  6. Adventure #4: Diffusion and Cell Size 6:1 3:1 2:1 Which cell size (and surface area to volume ratio) allows best diffusion to center of cells? (Think about being near the middle of each cell. Which one would give you the most food by diffusion?)

  7. Adventure #5 Kim Chee and Turgor Pressure What process made the water come out? Why? Again, think of where water is most and least concentrated. Does cabbage in kim chee have high or low turgor pressure?
