  1. PSA Remote Data Acquisition Network Planning CommitteeLinking Water, Land Use, Energy, and Global Climate Change Research Funding Sponsor:

  2. Our nation’s watersheds are at risk • Land, water, and energy are being impacted by unsustainable human demands. • Evidence is mounting that competing demands for water resources worldwide are resulting in both economic and ecological challenges. • This explosive demand is caused by population growth, economic development, and coastal urbanization. Ecology Economy The Research Drivers:Drought Watershed-scale river experiments are needed to define ecosystem needs for informed policy development Non-point source pollutants Micro-pollutants Biodiversity Sustainability

  3. Water Policy will shapethe Economic Future of South Carolina • Water quantity and quality will • determine economic vitality andfuture patterns of economic growth. • Is it time to shift the water resources management paradigm to the digital watershed and intelligent river?

  4. Within the next decade • real-time data will be necessary to optimize water withdrawal, wasteload allocation, and hydropower generation while preserving the ecology of our rivers and streams • remote data acquisition system will be essential to establish long-term water quality trends, monitor flow, track land-use changes, document pollution impacts, and effectively manage major rivers using real-time data

  5. Cyber Infrastructure: Remote Monitoring Initiative 16 November 2007 6 December 2007 • PSA Remote Data Acquisition Network Planning Committee • Linking Water, Land Use, Energy, and Global Climate Change • Bannockburn Project – Baruch • Savannah River Project – 200 River Mile SRAR Collaboration • Clemson Forest – Lake Issaqueena Source: WATERS Network cyberinfrastructure, NSF
