OPERATION THIBA (1/4) The President has authorised the employment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) for service in fulfillment of an international obligation of the RSA. This is in accordance with the provisions of Section 201(2)(c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. The SANDF Code Name for the deployment in SAMIDRC is Operation THIBA (Op THIBA). 3 22-Feb-24 "A Defence Force of the People, by the People, for the People"
OPERATION THIBA (2/4) The SADC Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit, SADC Troika plus the Force Intervention Brigade Troop Contributing Countries (EO-OTS Plus) held on 08 May 2023 in Windhoek, Namibia, amongst others, noted with great concern the unstable and deteriorating security situation prevailing in the Eastern DRC and reiterated its strong condemnation of the upsurge of conflicts and activities of armed groups, especially the resurgence of the M23 armed group operating in the eastern region of the DRC. In this meeting, the DRC government submitted a strong request for the SADC region to intervene, support and assist the DRC in her fight against the various illegal armed groups in the Eastern DRC, as well as her quest to bring the situation back to normalcy and ultimately restore the authority of the state. Subsequently, a collective decision was taken by the Heads of States and Government (HOS) of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Affairs (SADC Organ) to establish a SADC Mission (SAMIDRC) to support and assist the government of the DRC in her fight against the several Illegal Armed Groups (IAG) operating in the Eastern DRC, to save lives, bring the situation to normalcy, and ultimately restore the authority of the state. 4 22-Feb-24 "A Defence Force of the People, by the People, for the People"
OPERATION THIBA (3/4) A compliment of 2 900 members of the SANDF will be deployed to SAMIDRC for service in fulfillment of an international obligation of the RSA as its contribution to the SADC effort to support and assist the DRC in her fight against illegal armed groups and to bring safety, security and stability in the region.
