  1. Welcome to Back-to-School Night! Miss Walko’s 3rd Grade Class

  2. About Me • Graduated from The University of Scranton in 2015 with a BA in Early and Primary Education. • I moved to Ashburn from Scranton PA. • I am very excited to be here at NLE!

  3. Attendance • School begins promptly at 7:50 am • Please let me know in advance if your child will be absent for an extended period of time • Make-up work will be provided after the student returns to school • Adequate time will be given to complete make-up assignments Agendas • Assignments written daily • Homework will also be posted on the website • Reading and Math Homework Daily • Taken home every evening • Check and sign nightly

  4. Positive Reinforcement– rewarding the ‘good stuff.’ Earn Dojo Points for individual behavior Earn Fuzzies for whole class behavior Setting expectations clearly. Communication with parents is key! Classroom Management

  6. 7 Habits of Happy Kids Implemented to reinforce care for whole person. This helps development of happy kids in and out of the classroom.

  7. Birthdays • Please refer to the Student Handbook regarding birthday and party foods and invitations at school • Non-food items to celebrate your child’s special day • Invitations may be distributed in school if each child receives one • Register with PTO for your directory

  8. Snack • Working snack time in the morning • Please pack 1 healthy small snack • Water Bottles- Please label with your • child’s name

Lunch • Lunch time: 11:15-11:45 • Our ice cream day will be Wednesday  • Send in a note if you are joining us for lunch– No restaurant food! • If you would like a school lunch, your child can make your lunch choice in the morning • Check in office before entering. • Lunch money in baggie with name and number • Myschoolbucks.com

  10. Class Parties • Fall Festival • Winter Celebration • End-of-the-year Party • Information about volunteering will be sent out as the dates get closer

  11. Transportation • Students are required to go home each day as indicated at the beginning of the year • Send in a note with transportation changes • If a change is necessary by email, CC: Angela Ferrer to ensure request is received

  13. Curriculum Nine Week Plans Differentiated Instruction Math: flexible grouping according to student needs. Common Unit Assessments across 3rd grade Readers and Writers workshop Second year for Readers and Writers workshop in 3rd grade! Science & Social Studies Rotating units

  14. Reading and Writing Workshop • Shared Reading • Read Aloud • Reading Workshop– Mini Lesson, Independent Reading, Strategy/Reading Groups, Share Time • Writing Workshop • Word Study No Word Study homework, just studying before assessment.

  15. Phoenix • For the 2017 school year, all teachers will continue to use Phoenix Grade Book to enter student grades. Parents and students will also still have access to a new and improved portals called ParentVUE and StudentVUE. • Parents and students will have near real-time access to information on assignments and grades, attendance, class schedules, graduation status and more. • ParentVUE offers a single sign-on to view school information for all siblings, regardless of the grade level or school of attendance. 

  16. Grading • Grading will be 1, 2, 3, 4 (with pluses) • Percentages will not be given on tests, instead it will be on the 4 point scale and they will also not have a letter grade assigned. Report cards will still have a letter assigned. • Differentiates mastery of skill vs. going ‘beyond’ (application of skill) • Grades will be updated in a timely manner into Phoenix • Thursdays folders will go home with graded/completed work some to be returned

  17. BYOT • Newton-Lee is now a BYOT school • Initially, will not be everyday • Working towards integration • To sign: Signature Form and Student/Parent Technology Usage (green form) • Students Rights and Responsibilities/ Media Release form (yellow form)

  18. SOL Testing • Math and Reading– 2 day testing • CAT Testing (adapts to how well you are doing) • Science and Social Studies– Performance Task Assessments • Benchmark Testing, taken on the computer, and the results are used for strategy work and instructional purposes
