2. Intro to Unity Describe the principle and it’s overall characteristics: • relationship that helps all elements function together • gives sense of one-ness • helps organize an image, facilitates interpretation • the design is greater than the sum of its parts Unity

3. Characteristic 1: helps all elements function together There are many ways to achieve unity, some include: • Proximity- the closer the elements are to one another the more likely the viewer is to see them as a group • Repetition- of line, shape, pattern, color, texture. The viewer relates similar shapes to one another, this unifies the work. • Continuation- of a line, edge, direction. This leads the viewer’s eye through a piece comfortably and successfully. • The use of a common background Unity

Characteristics 2: gives sense of one-ness • The eye of the viewer seeks a unified whole, meaning the viewer looks for a connection between the elements unconsciously • This is because the mind simplifies and organizes information, and is called the gestalt theory of visual perception • This connection is unity Unity

5. Characteristics 3: helps organize an image, facilitates interpretation • Unity creates a sense of order • One way this is accomplished is by repeating the key elements, balancing them throughout the composition, and then adding a little variety so that the design has its own sense of personality • Interpretation is facilitated by the viewing experience. Balance, harmony, and elements arranged in order to guide the eye through a piece (continuation, line, pattern, color arrangement, etc.) are key to achieving this Unity

6. Characteristics 4: the design is greater than the sum of its parts • A unified design is a successful design, therefore unity is perhaps the most important of the elements. Its supported by all other principals. • A unified design is greater than the sum of its parts. It is seen first as a whole, and then the individual elements are noticed • Elements work together to support the design as a whole • Unity can be compared to harmony or wholeness Unity
