  1. CALL Hypertext, hypermedia and multimedia

  2. Hypertext • Refers to links among textual items, often indicated by keywords set in underlined blue type that, when highlighted by a pointer device and selected or clicked, takes the reader to the referent. • Hypertext is text which contains links to other texts. The term was coined by Ted Nelson around 1965 (see History ). • These links are usually defined in terms of their activity as hotlinks or hyperlinks

  3. Hypermedia • Hypermedia refers to similar links as those used in hypertext, but instead of simply linking text to text, hypermedia involves linking various media, such as sound, images, animation and or video • ALLP

  4. Multimedia • Tends to feature several media types including text, images, sounds, video and /or animations. • Multimedia is used to encompass the non- linear organization of text in hypertext and the non-linear and multiple organization formats in hypermedia

  6. Affordance and disaffordance • Affordance : objects such as chair • Disaffordance: flashing words or pictures that distract from the purpose of reading

  7. Interface • The aspect of a computer that allow the user to have visual interaction with a program

  8. Applications to general learning • There are three main advantages to hypertext: • A hypertext footnote can be traced backwards and forwards to the referent or reference respectively. • No need for paraphrasing • Visible at the same time as the text

  9. Applications of multimedia • Promotes interest when it comes to improving reading skills among averaged and less-skilled readers • Promotion of autonomous language learning
